My Gen 2 gave up after 2+ years Gen 1 still works after 5 years.

Maybe thunder but nothing else got damaged

Miniserver only controls 24 lights via DMX

Thank you

What light switches are you using? Seems to me if you are only using it for lighting there must be other options that maybe make more sense?

... or do you want Loxone for possible future additions?

As discussed several times here, a Miniserver Gen 1 still actually seems like a half decent option to use as a KNX logic controller as there isn't much competition in that area, but a Gen 2 needs a KNX extension and makes the value proposition less enticing.

That seems unusual.  Any idea what has failed?  regardless of the official warranty I'd be talking to Loxone about https://commission.europa.eu/law/law-topic/consumer-protection-law/consumer-contract-law/consumer-rights-directive_en and a reasonable expectation of lifespan for a product thats running your house.  At the very least I'd be hoping for a heavily discounted replacement

Touching wood but mine is 10 years old, and I've not heard of many  failures on here.
I run mine on a cheap computer UPS which shields it from the vagaries of the mains supply but I'm not sure much shields from lightning strikes (though you'd expect it to take out a lot more than your miniserver if that was the issue).

Thank you for your comments!
Our Gen 1 works fine and I am in contact with Loxone so we will see but first word from Lox is out of warranty after 2+ years. I have asked where to send for repair.
I Sourced 2 gen 1 off ebay also having more confidence in gen 1 now...

Rob, what other alternative were you thinking of?
In this smaller house I did 24V light with D4s but the idea is to integrate heat and more over time.
Lox is powered by the same MeanWell computer power supply as the lights
In the main building we have Loxone
I am (still) terrible at the simple Lox programming but I finally get it to work, too much to work on to build knowledge sadly..

I don't know how often you have lightning nearby, but I have fried multiple Gen1 miniservers due to lightning yet other things on the network were unaffected.  The last time my miniserver fried, it was evident that the surge came through my DSL line as the DSL connector melted and burned the steel back plane of the cabinet.  That was about 6 years ago.  Following that incident, I installed a copper to fiber converter from my DSL modem, then a short fiber cable to a fiber to copper converter to my router (all cheap from Aliexpress), and I've never had a problem since.

If you suspect lightning, you may want to consider trying this method.

THX for the suggestions
Response from Loxone below,
My setup is fiber with TP Link fiber to ethernet + ethernet switch in small building driving 24V DMX D4 only. Nothing else took a hit... AVR, Heatpump, AP etc all good.

Hello Stefan Latt,

Thanks for reaching out to Loxone Support!

Following a thorough analysis of the claimed Miniserver, we have determined that the damage was caused by external influences such as overload, incorrect wiring, incompatible load type, unsuitable dimming method, or overvoltage from the power supply or other installation-related sources.

In this case the cause was an overvoltage over Ethernet as one of the checked resistors has only 18,1 Ohm to GND.

As this type of damage is not covered under warranty and is unfortunately not repairable or economically viable to fix, we regret to inform you that we cannot offer a replacement or repair.

 Thank you for your understanding.

We’re committed to providing fast, free support. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.

 Smart Regards,

New Markets Support

My question for the forum would be
1) what would cause and 'overvoltage via internet'
2) how does one protect ones ethernet network from that risk (especially the mini server)

1) Lightning?

Very interesting and concerning that you have fiber.  In my case the surges always came through the DSL line and took out the DSL modem.  Interestingly, my TP-Link (at the time - now a Ubiquity UDM Pro) always survived as did most other things on the network, but 3;/;'/ times my miniserver took the hit.  Once in addition, 2 of my analog temp sensors also died in the same event.  All others were fine, AP's, switches, NAS, all fine.

Do you have any very long Ethernet cable runs?  I have read that long runs can act like an antenna when lightning strikes nearby and send a surge through the cable.  I have a long (~50 - 60 meter) run that I replaced with a fiber to protect against that.

I'm thinking I will add one of these between the network and my miniserver as well, and I'm contemplating on buying the 24 port network suppressor as to help protect everything else on the network.

I have about 10m cable from router to Miniserver. Yes surge protection is probably a good idea...
