Thank you so much for agreeing to help me to test out my Android app.
For some introductory information about the app, what it is and what it does, you could check out the associated website:
https://graemefox.github.io/lakedistrict-wainwrights/"Wainwright bagging" is a very common hobby in the Lake District of England, UK, where walkers or hikers try to climb all of the 214 mountain peaks as described in a classic set of guidebooks to the area written by Alfred Wainwright.
In my personal experience, there are parents who would like to be able to walk the hills but struggle to motivate their children to also get excited about climbing the peaks.
This app was designed to try to encourage families with younger kids to get out into nature by incorporating a "Wainwright tracker" but some elements targeted at younger kids such as a geo-locating element (the app counts you down to the peak and appropriate animations appear on cue to celebrate your achievement) - and also having cute characters in the app that can be upgraded with accessories by climbing more hills.
We also try to include some educational content about the area through "passport stamps" that each about the different parts of the Lake District and stories that include history of the area and the culture.
If you are lucky enough to be in and around Cumbria, England then please have a go at using the app "for real" - Ie. using the "Locate" tab to choose a target Wainwright and conquer it by climbing to the top.
For those not in Cumbria, the app is still fully functional and be thoroughly tested. You can manually conquer a Wainwright by chooding "Settings - Manual Mode - Manually Conquer or Unconquer a Wainwright" and this has exactly the same effect as physically climbing to the top of the hill.
Crucial elements that I would really value feedback on:
1) Overall look and fell of the app on your phone
- Are there any annoying overlapping elements? Does anything expand off the side/bottom of the screen?
2) Does the "Download offline maps" work successfully?
3) If you use the "Locate" tab, and "Find my nearest Wainwright" - is it able to successfully access location services, locate you, and calculate your distance to your nearest Wainwright?
4) Unlock behaviour
- if using "Manual Mode" as described above, as you conquer hills do the various medals, rewards, characters, accessories, stories, etc. unlock?
5) Quality of the unlocks
- this is really designed at families with young children so I would really appreciate the feedback from parents with young families about whether they think their children would appreciate that types of unlocks that we're presenting. There will never be anything to buy in the app - nothing will be locked behind a paywall (although I may charge a small amount for the app itself) and so absolutely everything will be unlockable by families once they have installed the app.
This is my first ever app, and first ever attempt at publishing an app to the Play Store. I'll try my best to respond to feedback and fix any bugs - but bear with me! I'm feeling my way through this new process.
All the best and I hope you enjoy trying out the app,
Thanks,
Graeme
