1.21 Enhancements Update

Hi, Kubernetes community!

We are now in week three of the Kubernetes 1.21 release which means, Enhancements Freeze is coming: Tuesday, Feb.9th

The Enhancements team has reached out to each SIG via slack reminding folks of the new opt-in process and confirming which enhancements are currently being tracked for each SIG.

As of now, the Enhancement team is tracking 24 Enhancements

• SIG Api-machinery: 5

  • Server-side Apply

  • Insecure Backend Proxy

  • Efficient watch resumption

  • Immutable label selectors for all namespaces

  • Block service ExternalIPs via admission

• SIG Auth: 2

  • Bound service account tokens (RootCAConfig GA, BoundServiceAccountTokenVolume beta)

  • External client-go credential providers

• SIG Network: 6

  • Graceful Terminating for Local External Traffic Policy

  • IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack support

  • Tracking Terminating Endpoints

  • Service Type=LoadBalancer Class

  • Service Internal Traffic Policy

  • Network Policy port ranges

• SIG Storage: 10

  • Immutable secrets and configmaps

  • Volume health

  • Storage capacity tracking for pod scheduling

  • Volume populator

  • PVC inline ephemeral volumes (work with CSI driver)

  • AzureFile CSI migration

  • Object storage support in Kubernetes

  • CSI service account token

  • Non-graceful node shutdown

  • Allow Kubernetes to supply pod's fsgroup to CSI driver on mount

• SIG Windows: 1

  • Support for Windows privileged containers

If your SIG is not listed above we are currently tracking 0 enhancements for 1.21 for your SIG. If you would like to submit an enhancement for the 1.21 cycle, please make sure to discuss your enhancements with both sponsoring and participating SIGs to ensure that all SIGs responsible have agreed before opting in.

Please remember that having your enhancements tracked only means the responsible SIG has opted-in to the release. All KEPs must also still meet the following criteria by Enhancements Freeze, Feb. 9th:

• Merged in an implementable state

• Have test plans

• Have graduation criteria

• Have an open issue in the release milestone

• Have Production Readiness Review

Lastly, access to the tracking sheet will be removed after the Enhancements Freeze. Any changes needed after the freeze will require an exception.
