Phil has not implemented use of the RX888 downconverter.
It seems there are several excellent VHF/UHF SDRs already supported by KA9Q-radio.
Unlike the 0-30 bands where the RX888 is a unique product, it would at best only duplicate the functionality of an Airspy or SDRPlay on VHF/UHF.

I'm just curious -- has anyone here done anything with the VHF/UHF
downconverter in the RX888?  Is it accessible using the Linux driver?

From the schematics I've seen, it looks like the converter uses the
same clock as the ADC, so it should be able to have excellent
stability/accuracy when used with a GPSDO.

Actually a while ago I created a branch called 'rx888-vhf' in my fork of ka9q-radio: https://github.com/fventuri/ka9q-radio/tree/rx888-vhf
It has never been tested, so it has a probably a few bugs, but if you want to be the guinea pig, John, I'll be happy to help you troubleshoot it.

That branch comes off an older version of ka9q-radio (GitHub reports it is 316 commits behind Phil's), but if we get it to work, it shouldn't be too hard to port those changes to the current version of ka9q-radio.

Agreed, but at $90 the RX888 is a lot less expensive than the Airspy R2
(I paid about $160 for one of those at Hamvention). It seems to have
similar frequency coverage and with its better ADC and wider bandwidth
it could be a very capable receiver.

Franco, I'll take you up on that. I'll try to set up a test bed in the

I guess I should play with it and pull it into my version if it works. Yeah, it's no better than an Airspy R2 since both use the same TV tuner front end with a ~8 MHz bandwidth, but it's worth supporting just for the flexibility.

The RX888 appears to be (almost) unique in its external clock input which is needed for WSPR reception on VHF/UHF bands, not to mention its low cost.

So I think it is important to include support for the tuner in KA9Q-radio.

I am sending this via email because I already posted it twice to the ka9q-radio group and it got deleted twice.

I ported all the (untested) changes I made a while ago to 'rx888.c' to support the VHF/UHF tuner to the latest version from Phil's repository, so that the branch 'rx888-vhf' in my repository (https://github.com/fventuri/ka9q-radio/tree/rx888-vhf) is now just one commit ahead of Phil's.

A couple of comments:
- there's a new setting called 'frequency' that allows to set the LO frequency of the VHF/UHF tuner. That value can also be changed with the function 'rx888_tune()', which works the same way 'airspy_tune()' does for the Airspy. A selection of 'frequency=0' (i.e. 'rx888_tune(0)') should set the RX888 in direct sampling mode ('HF mode'), the same way we run the RX888 today
- the Rafael Micro R828D tuner has several gains/attenuations: in this first version I mapped the configuration setting 'att' to 'R82XX_ATTENUATOR' (it is mapped to 'DAT31_ATT' in HF mode) and the configuration setting 'gain' to 'R82XX_VGA' (instead of 'AD8340_VGA'), but these gain/attenuation mappings can be easily changed later as we see fit.

Hi Franco,

I have alerted Phil to your new code and I'll look for WD sites beyond John's where we can test it out.

Thanks!

Rob, hopefully this weekend I'll get it installed on my home (N8UR)
system. Not sure if we're likely to see any WSPR activity on VHF/UHF
here, but it will be on a discone antenna and there should be plenty of
signals simply to listen to.

The Airspy R2 has external clocking at 10 MHz, which is why I have so much 10 MHz floating around my shack.

I don't really need a precise clock to monitor the local repeaters, but it was handy when I was looking at local digital TV pilot carriers.

The SDRspace RSPduo and RSPdx have an external clock input at the somewhat non-standard frequency of 24MHz, not a problem for a Bodnar (in fact I can get a dual output Bodnar to generate 24MHz and 27MHz at the same time, ask me if you would like settings).

BTW, I was given the wrong tracking number for the RX888 I ordered.  Fingers crossed it makes it here.

I have been running a 2m receiver with ka9q-radio and airspyR2 for about 6 months.

I have spare rx888s. Suggestions on swapping the receivers? (Conf file or other changes)

Dave,

If your existing AirspyR2 system is on the same LAN, then you can add decoding its spots  to your existing SW WD system:

1) In the Airspy's radiod@..conf file, change ttl = 0 to ttl = 1
     and restart radiod
2) On your SW WD system:
    a) add to your  RECEIVER_LIST a receiver line with the form:
          "KA9Q_Airspy      <the DNS name of the Airspy's multicast stream>. <Your Maidenhead>  KV0S  NULL"
     b) To your WSPR_SCHEDULE add the job:
             "KA9Q_Airspy,2,W2:F2"
      c) run 'wdv' to validate those changes to WD.conf.  WD will then start listening and decoding at the start of the next odd minute.

I can't make those changes for you since your WD RAC isn't open.

73,

Rob

I was using the airspyR2 to monitor 2m repeaters especially during server weather.

I will explore the possibilities.

Dave, are you using an external frequency reference on your Airspy R2? Not really meaningful for FM repeater monitoring, but obviously useful for WSPR spotting. It requires 10 MHz rather than 27 MHz, which is a problem if you also monitor WWV on 10 MHz; it gets everywhere.

The Airspy R2 will automatically switch to the external reference when present, but be careful. It *may* lock up if it loses that reference (instead of reverting to the internal TCXO). This may require a power cycle of the device, or at least a reboot of the host.

If the deal seems to good to be true, its probably a scam.  I've had some luck with Ali, but avoid any dealers with a store name Shop######### Store, for which there are many and seem to be fly by night.  I believe some are catching on and creating real store names, but a few clicks to check reviews on this particular dealer led me to

which seems to indicate some think this is a fake/scam store too.  Good luck and please report back!

BTW, the only reliable dealer I've gotten RX-888s from on Ali was OpensourceSDRLab Store

Hi Andy (and others),

You may very well be correct that this is a scam vendor.  I'm waiting for the unit I ordered to arrive and the tracking information they supply worries me.

I too have had excellent results with OpensourceSDRLab.  They even refunded my purchase when I returned a defective RX888.

So everyone should be cautious about ordering until I can report my order arrived.

Thanks Phil.
Once the errors with this initial implementation are fixed, to set the RT828D tuner clock I plan to use the same algorithm I use to compute the ADC clock where the frequency error is kept to a minimum and one can apply a ppm correction.
This way it could be perhaps used for VHF/UHF cases where having a good LO frequency important.

Is WSPR even a thing above 100MHz?

!!!!!

WSPR is very much a thing above 100 MHz!!

See the large amount of data and reports on the 2m+ WSPR pages.

We've been experimenting, gathering data and making discoveries from 2m through 23 cm for over a decade now.

4000+ km spots across the Pacific from Hawaii to the Mainland
Aircraft scatter on virtually any VHF-microwave band out to 900+km
Wing tip vortex analysis
Individual aircraft ID and path analysis
WSPR-15 on 70cm
and much more.

Hi Franco,

Yes, VHF/UHF WSPR is of great interest to us, but to date the receivers that work stably at those frequencies have been expensive.  Even the AirspyR2 is $300.  So a bank of 4 GPSDO RX888 would cost a fraction of other solutions and might offer wider dynamic range.

So thanks for your interest and I look forward to John's test results.

I just ported all the (untested) changes for the VHF/UHF tuner to the latest 'rx888.c', so the branch 'rx888-vhf' (https://github.com/fventuri/ka9q-radio/tree/rx888-vhf) is now just one commit ahead of Phil's latest version.

A few notes on how it is supposed to work:
- there's a new parameter called 'frequency' that sets the center frequency of the VHF/UHF tuner; that parameter can be changed via the function 'rx888_tune()' in the same way it is selected for the Airspy and other similar SDRs with that tuner. The selection 'frequency=0' (i.e. rx888_tune(0)) should set the RX888 to work in 'HF mode', or direct sampling mode, like it does now.
- the Rafael Micro R828D tuner used in the RX888 has several gains/attenuations: in this initial version I mapped 'att' to 'R82XX_ATTENUATOR' (instead of 'DAT31_ATT' in HF mode) and 'gain' to 'R82XX_VGA' (instead of 'AD8340_VGA' in HF mode), but these can changed as we se fit

- the Rafael Micro R828D tuner has several gains/attenuations: in this first version I mapped the configuration setting 'att' to 'R82XX_ATTENUATOR' (it is mapped to 'DAT31_ATT' in HF mode), and the configuration setting 'gain' to 'R82XX_VGA' (instead of 'AD8340_VGA'), but these gain/attenuation mappings can be easily changed later as we see fit.

Thanks Lester.  So you are saying on Ali, MARK it as delivered then proceed to show it was delivered with a tracking number that was NOT my address?

Sorry for the ignorance here, I have not had to deal with this before.

I think the problem is the real people at Ali have not gotten in the loop yet.  The seller tried to buy me off with a 10% refund.  Refused.

Do you know where on Ali a complaint can be stated?  I've never had a problem to know where to go.
