Robert,
You mentioned that the events.joomla.org site is currently in the process of development.

Would you mind letting us know the following so that we know what's going on?
  • Who is working on it?
  • Are more volunteers needed to finish it faster? Can any of us help?
  • Can we have a list of features this site will have? (it doesn't appear that there was much discussion with actual Joomla Day organizers regarding features)
  • What resources and tools will be available to organizers?
  • Do we need to create more documentation/tools for this site? Or are they already finished somewhere?
  • What do you need from the rest of us in preparation of both launch and pre-lauch of this new site?

Anything that I can do to help, please let me know.   I have run 2 joomladay events in NYC (2009, 2011), and I have run JoomlaCamp (2011), Installfest (2010) as well, which were smaller more local type  of events.

I have lists upon lists that could be shared with other group organizers, also a spreadsheet that I used for budgeting and running the event, I could easily create a 'blank one' for others to work off of.

Just let me know I would love to help.

thanks,
Laura

I am confused about the rationale for proliferating yet another Joomla! subdomain. Is there a compelling reason why events can’t be more fully built out under the community subdomain? The more domains we add, the further away we get from the desire of the community for a universal login to all Joomla.org assets.

fully agree
I think it would be much better to integrate all events related information in an existing environment.
And "community" fits of course best.

On a technical note while c.j.org is still on 1.5 then it wouldnt be possible to provide the acl requirements. Lets concentrate on getting the relevant information published and available and then this site will just be one of many that can join the PLT list of sites to be evaluated and considered for merging etc Personaly I wouldnt want to hold my breadth for any decision about sites from the plt and we need to get that information out now and available

Sorry, but isn’t that adding an additional layer of complexity? Why can’t we have events-dot as part of the information architecture of an appropriate existing Joomla! site? Especially as it is mostly JUGs that produce the events, I don’t right now see a good rationale for further fracture of our websites. Though—I can be convinced.

Hagen if you look at the original ideas for the site https://groups.google.com/d/topic/joomla-events/Mf6Tip17T8o/discussion you will see that it has both public parts and parts that are only relevant for event organisers and not for public consumption

Guys I think we are getting WAYYYY off topic of my original post and questions I asked.
Obviously this is happening and there is nothing that can be changed about the fact that the site is in progress. Fine, let's move on.
The real questions are -  what is happening with this site? Who is involved?  What features will it have? Period.
Bickering about all this other stuff is trivial and really doesn't matter at this point and time.

thanks for the link, I missed that discussion totally.
When I understand it right it is already decided that a new site
http://events.joomla.org will be build by T.C.
... coming back to the original question from Mike ... :)
I am still interested in the answers to his questions.

And I still think it would be ... maybe more complicate ...but from a "Jumla" point of view much better to integrate the events list and the speaker list in the "community area" than build something new.

I’m sorry if this is a diversion from your original post, Mike, but how it happens matters to a larger picture and I am not backing off of that.

It is major complaint of our community that Joomla.org is an unwieldy set of sites which require multiple accounts, have no global search functions, and poorly purposed assets. For instance, where do you go on Joomla.org for support? How is a newcomer meant to know that People different from Community from Forum from Resources? Ad-hoc decisions without a global site strategy have resulted in the default creation of among the largest and most complex sites in the world and this presents a major barrier to entry for newbies.

So forgive me if I am extremely reluctant to see us add to that problem without thoughtful consideration. I think there are fine places to prominently locate our increasing numbers of events without adding to the complexity facing our increasing numbers of new Joomla! users. Before we put yet another subdomain up, I want to know it’s necessary.

Mr. Sullivan, I am not saying you cannot discuss your issues, however THIS topic, and the event team list is not the place to raise concerns of site segregation and single sign-on issues. Perhaps you should post about these types of issues in a more appropriate place.
Your issues have nothing to do with the topic of this discussion and the questions I have raised.
We aren't here to talk about the other Joomla.org suite of websites.
The topic is about THIS website and ONLY this website and its features. This is the site we want to know answers about. Not the rest.
Not sure what is so hard to understand about that.
Perhaps you would be better focusing your attention of your concern to the Joomla.org site redesign team. you would have more impact there and speak to the actual people that can address your concerns.

Thanks for keeping the discussion alive Mike et al!

As for what's been done - I've installed Joomla, and was awaiting some followup for items that I was asked to install for security etc.  I should have the site fully ready to be developed by the end of the day, and will start adding access for those who wish to work on it.

What we need is to get a list going of exactly what we're going to put on the site, perhaps with goals for 'phases' of implementation, and get started developing.

I really like the ideas that Justin presented as an 'overall' idea of what we hope to accomplish:

1) Promote all upcoming J! events
2) An archive of past J! events (i.e. historical timeline)
3) Documentation for event organizers (like Brian and Mike mentioned)

Also like the idea of having a directory of speakers and individual
profiles for each where speakers can display which events they spoke
at etc.

What else?

I think that first and foremost the idea of getting searchable JDay / Joomla Events up and running should be our focus, with the other items coming  even after we get the site launched ... unless anyone feels otherwise?

Does anyone object to us using an actual system to manage a project, so that we can set goals, tasks, assign things / let people assign themselves etc?  Or does this need to continue to be done via a google group?
You'll have to forgive me, I am not a fan of google groups for managing things that need to get done, as it seems to me that all that gets done in google groups is talking .... BUT, if we must use this system then so be it :)

  • Who is working on it?
I spoke with TJ about this on this years JAB and I have asked him some weeks ago to take the lead on this. Main goals for the site are:

* Directory of events (first Joomla!Day, but later also Joomla!nights, Joomla!whatever, maybe JUG meetings, ....)
* Directory of speakers/presentations
* Not sure but might be an option, a directory of sponsors

  • Are more volunteers needed to finish it faster? Can any of us help?
I think yes, but I'll let this in TJ hands how and when he will involve more people.

  • Can we have a list of features this site will have? (it doesn't appear that there was much discussion with actual Joomla Day organizers regarding features)
There was an option to voice opinions, some did, but nothing is build in stone. I'm a fan of starting small and extending later.

  • What resources and tools will be available to organizers?
That depends on what we all produce.

  • Do we need to create more documentation/tools for this site? Or are they already finished somewhere?
We had already started to document some things here: http://docs.joomla.org/How_to_Organize_a_Joomla!Day feel free to add whatever you find useful.

  • What do you need from the rest of us in preparation of both launch and pre-lauch of this new site?

Also something for TJ tolist.

Ok, so we have a Basecamp project set up for us to use.

I think we should keep the discussion going here for ideas etc, but
would like to get those who want to help develop the site added to the
project so we can get to work building it out.

I think it would be wonderful to shoot for a launch right around the
new year, if we can make that happen?

Please let me know if you are interested in doing work on the site,
and I'll get you added. For the sake of sanity, we'll want to keep
the list of people working on the site small, however, all are
welcomed to continue in the discussion of ideas / wishes etc.

Hello and thank you for allowing the pleasure to become part of this discussion.  Kyle and I planned Joomla Day Austin this September.  Although, I have experience planning events it was my first Joomla Day and an events website would have been helpful.  Thank you Mike for taking the time to provide a few pointers during the planning process.

With regards to the site, allowing users to select type of event is useful (Joomla Days, Meetups, Training Classes, etc).  There are many trainers who post on their own sites, meetups, etc but it'd be nice to see an official list of classes by region.  Make sense?  See http://groups.drupal.org/event  Don't hate, just throwing thoughts out there and wishing I were a programmer.  ;)

I'd be happy to assist with documentation if help is needed.

I would think in about another week we should have detailed answers to the questions that I have asked at the beginning of this thread.
We should also have a better understanding of the exact types of documentations and resources that we will need contributions/suggestions from the community.

If not myself, someone from the site building team will be able to answer all these questions soon. We are still working out some ideas.
Just to note, the site has not been officially started yet as of this posting.

Robert,
You mentioned that the events.joomla.org site is currently in the process of development.

Be sure to read through the Event Resources List on the Joomla Events website:

Lots of good information on there for event organizers.
