Adding Meta Titles to Articles & Categories

We are working on adding the ability to add meta titles to articles
and categories the same way the meta description and keywords are
done.

I realize that meta titles can be customized when there is a menu link
but many articles never have menu links, so there is no way to
customize the page titles.

I have seen some old posts about this but it appears that it has never
been implemented. Here is one

I think the addition of the meta title for articles and categories
would be nice addition to the Joomla core.

Any thoughts on this?

Does anyone know if this feature is already in the works for Joomla
3.0?

You're right, Steven.
Many SEO people think it would be great feature.
And it must be in Joomla by default.

I've been working on the concept of metadata plugins that would allow you to flexibly allow you to replace or add to the fields in the json string holding meta data in the core. I think that's the best, most flexible way to go since different users want very different things from metadata. For example people on intranets don't care much about SEO but might care about more structured information management or a library with a catalog run off of Joomla might care about  Dublin Core.
