Greetings! Hey' I hope the sailing prep is coming to an end for you
and a launching is in your futures! I ordered a new North Kite
yesterday and was a little shocked on the price. Anyone have a "Fair
Market Price Average" for a "smallish" Kite? This one I ordered was
shocking at $10.00 a square foot. Please pass the Phoenix Trophy my
way,,,, "thank you very much!?!?"

Try getting a quote from Haarstick, they built a kite last season for a guy int the Annapolis fleet.  Email Doug Burtner...they designed a new kite with deeper draft for running and windward leeward courses... so it probably doesn't reach hot as well.

Several years ago when I bought my kite from north it was around a grand...and I went with them because it was the cheapest (at the time).

Best,

I have a Ullman spin that is hot on a reach. It also does well on a run when you let the tack line out a bit and let the clue rotate a bit high.

Dave Ullman scored an 11 at the Melges 24 North Americans against us
(we scored 118 :-/ ) and no we weren't DFL! So he knows his shit!!!
The North loft is jut across the lake and so I bought on of theirs. I
just didn't expect that kind-a-moola! Hey, I'm cheap! The kite cost
1/4 of the entire J-18 w/trailer! I better paint flames on my hull
since I gonna be so FAST!

I'm the guy in the Annapolis fleet that got the spinnaker from
Haarstick. They gave me a "development discount" to get me to
experiment with their idea of a little more fullness in the kite.
$750, IIRC. I sent them my kite, from which they built a slightly
different shape. Due to various reasons (almost no actual sailing
days from lack of wind or too much, personal incompetence in lining up
crew, etc.) I used the kite in only one race. Fairly light winds, and
the kite didn't exactly blow (sorry) everyone away. I'm usually
fairly competitive downwind, due mostly to my lack of muscles meaning
that I don't weigh that much, and my crews are usually similar. With
the new kite, I couldn't seem to find the groove. More to the point,
I lost a couple of places on the downwind legs. My old (North) kite
usually at least kept me in position in the fleet.

That being said, it was one race. Not much wind. No other practice
with the new kite. Hardly any sailing for me last year, I was rusty
and not on my game. Not much to go on.

I don't know if Haarstick would make the same deal for another J18
sailor. They were anxious to see pictures, and would have offered
some help in using the new kite to its best advantage. Due to my own
lameness (no water-resistant camera, lack of actual time with the kite
in the air), they didn't get the opportunity to give assistance. They
were great to work with. I bought a new main and jib from them, too.
Added bonus, I got a bunch of cool-guy Haarstick sail ties, one of
which makes a perfect harness for my Jib Dog. The Main Dog could use
one, too, but he's pretty small. And no, I'm not looking to round out
the Dog group with a Spinnaker Dog.

The disadvantage to non-one design spinnakers is clear. You don't conform to class rules. If you race in mixed fleet or one design and are upfront about the mod, you may be able negotiate a handicap rating mod. In one design, you don't have an option. If the intent is just to go fast...have fun!

Actually the one design rules offer a range of dimensions possible for
a one design compliant kite...assuming you are within the specs, there
is some room to work within the design constraints though perhaps not
that much...(roughly 15- 20 centimeters on the edges length...) but
the real difference is in the shape you can create with the weights
and depths of the sail (eg: 175 cm range at 3/4 height is the biggest
place to add or reduce cloth- the "shoulders of teh kite" could make a
difference is how well is runs v. reaches) :

"# 5.4 Asymmetrical Spinnaker Leech length shall not exceed 5370 nor
be less than 5218 mm.

* 5.4.1 The luff length shall not exceed 6883 nor be less than
6655 mm.
* 5.4.2 The foot length shall not exceed 4674 nor be less than
4445 mm.
* 5.4.3 The midpoint of the foot is determined by folding the
spinnaker vertically and superimposing the tack and clew matching the
edges of the sailcloth. The distance from the midpoint of the foot to
the head shall not exceed 6426 mm nor be less than 6325 mm
* 5.4.4 Total weight measurements for the asymmetrical spinnaker
shall be taken at 3/4 height, 1/2 height. 1/4 height measuring points
on the leech and the luff. The total weight measurements shall not
exceed: 3/4 height = 3823 mm maximum, 2070 mm minimum; 1/2 height =
3823 mm maximum, 3696 mm minimum; 1/4 = 4585 mm maximum, 4253 mm
minimum.

Angus at the North loft in Seattle did a really nice job verifying
the measurements for me yesterday. The kite is so crinlky, it was an
awesome birthday present to pick it up! Out to check it today!
