Next Mtg -- May 16Jewish Genealogical Society of Sacramento Ron Arons, "Sex, Lies and Genealogical Tape" May 16, 2021, 10 a.m. to noon, by Zoom Ron Arons has been on an incredible journey the past 20 years researching his criminal ancestor, Isaac Spier. Isaac went by multiple first and middle names, committed multiple crimes (bigamy twice, attempted extortion, forgery, and grand larceny), and served three years in Sing Sing Prison. This led to Ron's book, "The Jews of Sing Sing." He returns to the JGSS with an updated presentation on May 16. It demonstrates individual-focused genealogy -- filling out an ancestor's story by collecting as many documents as possible. Understanding their life helps explain your life. In 2008, Ron Arons appeared on the PBS television series, The Jewish Americans, as an expert on the Jewish criminals of New York's Lower East Side. On 60 Minutes …

Ritchie Boys: The secret U.S. unit bolstered by German-born Jews who helped the Allies beat Hitler - 60 Minutes - CBS News

This piece, which aired in two segments on May 9, showcases now 95-year-old + soldiers who were involved in this special effort during World War II.  It's worth a look.

April 18, 2021 JGSS Meeting

JGSS member Maryellen Burns returned to talk about Yiddish Theater. Hers is a personal story -- her grandfather was working in pharmaceuticals, she said, but was also a Yiddish actor -- Maurice Sonneschein (Marx).

He moved to Los Angeles to join cousins who worked in Hollywood. "Who knew there was major Yiddish theater in California?"

She said the theater started around 1883 in Romania, when Russia outlawed Yiddish theater after the assassination of the Czar.

Several members -- Dave Reingold, Marlene Frankel and Judy Persin -- noted relatives in Yiddish theater.

Maryellen recalled getting to know actor Herschel Bernardi when she was working the Sacramento Music Circus during a production of "Fiddler on the Roof."  "We had two friends in common in Los Angeles and everyday he would tell me another aspect of his life." Bernardi, in his early years, was in several Yiddish films and his parents were in Yiddish theater.

Other actors involved in Yiddish theater included Paul Muni, Edward G. Robinson, Joel Grey, Walter Matthau, Kirk Douglas and Leonard Nimoy.

At one time, Maryellen said, there were about 11 Yiddish theaters within five blocks. There are now about 45 in the United States.

She said in the 1930s there were some 75,000 Jewish residents in Los Angeles and several theaters.  Through the Federal Theater Project over four years, the government funded Yiddish troupes.

Maryellen said she discovered her grandfather was in 200 silent films as she tried to "give flesh" to his background. Her research on family members included Google books.

She recommended looking at YouTube videos, and Teven Laxer played a 1932 song by Herman Yablokoff -- "Nature Boy," which was apparently later stolen by Nat King Cole

Following the presentation, Mort Rumberg led a brief discussion on whether the JGSS should set up a PayPal account for dues. It would cost about $1.05 per payment but doesn't provide much information on the user/member.

Mort was asked when we might return to in-person meetings. He said not before September, but will be checking with the Federation as to what they will allow.

From Teven Laxer: The Tenement Museum in New York City is providing virtual tours with several set for this week. Cost is $10 per device.  For details: - Tenement Museum
