I just downloaded the latest version of JCrypTool for Mac OS and I can't get the application to open.  When I click on the icon, I get the error message:

An error has occured.
See the log - /Users/ --- /.eclipse/1133968008_macos_cocoa_x86_64/configuration/1497027942988.log

I've looked for the log and can't find anything wrong.  I've got Java running on my machine, is there something I missed?  Thanks.

Hi, What Java version are you using? You can figure that out by typing "java -version" in the terminal.

The JCrypTool log is located in ~/Documents/.jcryptool/.metadata in the .log file. File and directory are hidden by default. It might be empty in your case, since the crash seems to happen early.

Hi Dominik, thank you for getting back to me.  My version of Java is an old one, I believe, 1.6.0_65.  Should I update to Java 8?  Thanks!

Hi Jason,

Yes, you need to upgrade. Java 8 is required to run JCrypTool.

Thanks, Dominik.  I'll try that and let you know how it goes.  I was also noticing in the log that the runtime bundle wasn't installed, should I do anything with that?

Sorry, I should have said in my last message that the runtime bundle wasn't resolved.  Thanks.

I think you should be fine after installing the Java Runtime in version 8. JCrypTool should work immediately, without another installation required.

Hi Dominik.  Thank you for putting up with all of my questions!  I have the latest version of Java installed, but am still running into the same issue of the runtime bundle.  The .log file shows the error as: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Unable to acquire application service. Ensure that the org.eclipse.core.runtime bundle is resolved and started (see config.ini).  Any ideas?  Thanks!

Hi Jason,

I've downloaded and tested the latest weekly build on macOS. Works on my machine, so it seems to be a settings problem on your Mac. Is it possible that Java 6 is still around on your system and used as the default JVM? Besides that, please delete the JCrypTool application, remove .jcryptool in your Documents folder and install JCrypTool again (extract it). It's unlikely that a JCrypTool setting is causing the problem but you never know.

Regards, Dominik
