Thanks so much Synthia and Dirk!

Synthia, great points.. We were already on a 512 buffer. The performer is on a Mac. I didn’t try an alternate jitter buffer strategy, that is an idea. I don’t think it was about disconnecting and reconnecting too quickly since we tried an entirely different server during troubleshooting. I will check out the “garbled” links.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a recording of what they were hearing, just a vocalized replica they attempted :)

Dirk, sounds like similar issues. I will hone in on the buffering and buffer strategies..

Thanks again!
Sarah

Hi,

I have found 512 very unstable for some reason. We found maximum stability at 256.

hi Sarah,

512 sometimes isn't enough buffer if the performer's internet connection isn't up to snuff.  you might try taking the person up to 1024 or even 2048 just to check this theory.

at this point i would start looking at the pieces between the performer and the router and see if there's something that can be fixed (bad cables and connections are the first place to look -- sometimes unplugging and plugging back in will clear things up).  or, if they are on a regional wireless network try improving the radio-receiving position of their router.

i could drop into a diagnostic session if that would help.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your input!

The outcome of this was that changing to a different computer helped reduce, but not fully remove, the garbling. It happened intermittently for them while the rest of the time they heard a clear connection. This was good enough to get through the performance, thankfully. They also froze during the performance for about 4 seconds, but the connection held and they were back in.

I heard another theory off-list that there could be a mismatch between how much bandwidth the hardware could handle versus what the internet connection could provide. The performer has a new 1Gbps network since the last project and another person performed with JackTrip on it successfully earlier this month with their hardware. Since changing to a different computer improved the garbling, this seems to point to a hardware issue. Will see with more testing ahead.

In any case the music turned out well!

Thanks again!
Sarah
