J still produce the J92S in France although the new J97 and J111 seem to be getting more interest
We raced a J92 and the a J92S. The S is a much nicer boat to sail, with the mods they made, bigger rig, cockpit, keel, rudder etc
Our IRC handicap seemed to level them out quite well. Some J92 went masthead kite and that seemed to help them dead downwind. The J92S headsail is limited by the shroud plate positions, we used a small headsail on the J92 and got good results.
I have now gone retro and have a J105, much different boat to sail, but still great fun
Best Regards

I assume an up-down jib, means NOT a furler
Most/all UK boats sail with hank sails now, they come down a lot quicker than TuffLuff.
We had horizontal battens in all our jibs
If you want some good J92 sail shapes then speak to Wooderz at Hyde sails, I think they deliver to USA now. Their carbon panel sails work very well

I also can't compare with the 92, but the J92s we race in Annapolis does just fine in light air. We got the biggest kite we could for the rating system here, and were able to do very well in wednesday night races, which is a lot of reaching. Due to the phrf class we were in it was much tougher to go W/L because we started with a bunch of faster upwind boats.
I will say the PHRF system here has some loop holes that have helped us, so I don't know if you can do similar things under a different rule. For instance, the leech of the spinnaker is not measured. So, free sail area for us, I know that's not the case in LIS for instance.
The smaller jib isn't a problem in light air, as long as you actually change your rig tune to power up in light air. We're actually looking at going to up down jibs so that we can have horizontal battens, can increase the size slightly (not penalized under phrf Chesapeake Bay), and just as importantly adjust the headstay more easily.
Rand, I know a J92s is for sale on the MD eastern shore, if you want to come do a wednesday night race in Annapolis and then go check that boat out, you're welcome to join us.

Thanks for the sales pitch. I'll miss the boat when it goes, but with a
kid going on to college, I'll get one year paid for.
The bottoms nearly done and ready to be splashed. I'll buy you and Todd a
beer for the free advertisement.

On the J2S we found that rig tensions made a lot of difference especially in light winds, slacken off completely

I have really enjoyed reading through this forum - a great group of people...this forum alone
has increased my interest in a J92 - ok so whats the problem?
I am looking for a single/DH platform for some wlis based distance racing ala Thin Man and a few others...
ala meaning similar events - not expecting similar results!
I considered a figaro or a Holby Quest or even a sunfast but none of these are available and as i say
the J92 looks a great platform as well - there's a great 92s for sale on the east coast and i am keen but wanted to
ask if the rating, while perhaps a bit too penal in terms of windward leeward course (92s vs 92 and vs other boats,)
meant the 92s was any less "fun" than a j92 classic....seems to me a 100 or so pounds of extra weight and
6 inches of extra draft might be a good thing for a DH specific boat - and I have read with great interest the
discussion about reaching sails that might work on the 92s...
Most of the other questions I have about the 2 boats are covered in this forum - I can live with a rating that is a bit
harsh as a result of a marketing campaign but I would like that hit to present itself mostly on w/l course and less
so in distance course and just generally blasting about ...
