Current problem is twofold:

Users(/artists with blasted Wacom pens...) keep dragging and dropping critical high-level folders into others, moving them (Windows clients).

In a misguided attempt to fix Isilon issues many months/IT people ago (because Isilon's support's go-to is to blame the site's infrastructure and clients...) the Isilon was stripped out of Active Directory.  It appears that included a chmod (and probably chown) across entire filesystem then all clients started accessing as root.  Grr.

So I have an idea on what has to be done but any pointers would be appreciated!

I think I posted this in a previous post, but here's what we've done:

We run into the same, "Whoops, I just moved a directory" issue here.  Part of our solution involved updating our Windows' clients drag-and-drop distance.  By default, you only have to move a directory/file 4 pixels, and it registers as a "move".  This is pretty small considering the resolution of today's monitors.  So we changed that to 50, and we've had no more accidental moves.

The registry values you'd want to change are "DragHeight" and "DragWidth" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

So far this looks like a great stopgap work-around for us, thank you very much Chris!

For any company (with artists using Wacom tablets especially) that can't for some reason lock down files, or even to prevent accidental moves on the files that aren't locked down, this should be quite helpful.

Went with 200 ourselves (so that moves have to be very deliberate).

One thing to mention is that it affects a lot more than folder drags.  Basically any drag operation in Windows Explorer.  Desktop icons.  Moving open windows.  I think we've even seen moving emails in Outlook have the delay (but almost all other applications are not affected).  This does tend to keep one from using this setting to extremes (I did test 4096 briefly, was interesting...).
