Hi Mr. Neil,

First time I am seeing this plant.  What are the uses of this tree?

Regards,

Mani.

Hi Mani,
Haven't the foggiest. It is a South Indian tree. Someone else will have to take the call.
                 Regards,
                   Neil Soares.

Dear Neilji,

This may not be H.nigra. Please check it in Talbot or Cook flora there
is a diagram of type specimen in one of these floras. According to
gamble H.nigra would eassily confuse with ferruginea and some people
treat them same species.
Please note the key characters of H. nigra as follows.

Leaves spatulate (narrowly oblong with the end expanded and broader,
more like a chemists spatula). Leaves up to 13cm long and 5cm broad
(may be at the broader part). When you consider the leaf measurements
you should get the leaves of mature trees here this picture is of a
sapling it looks.

And more importantly, for nigra the leaves are glabrous beneath.
whereas, if it is hairy it can be H. grahamii. Further, H.nigra is an
evergreen species found in the western slop of the Western Ghats
(endemic to Southern WG) reaching a height of more than 30m with a
straight trunk and a top crown (in Evergreen forest).

Here my bet is that this could be a sapling of H. grahamii.

Regards
Giby

Hi Dr.Giby,
You could be right. The sapling was transplanted from Kudremukh in Karnataka and it turns out that the the identity was established by my friend based on local inputs.

Holigarna for sure, but due to the paler beneath the leaves seen in one of the leaves slightly turned in your pics, and the leaves not as triangular from middle  as in H. grahamii, this could well turn  out to be H. Arnottiana.

regards,
Rashida.
