Can't seem to link up with the Eastland thread for some electronic reason but I did want to second the recommendation that we, in some fashion, honor Jim. I just saw him last week at his favorite watering hole, The Black Seal in Essex CT. He was alone at the bar where he held court for so many years, often with Mark Ellis, a resident of Essex. He was all set to regale us with Nonsuch lore but I was soon, (sadly), pulled away to join other friends. Last night, of all things, there was a fire at the Black Seal. The extent of the damage has not been reported yet as far as I know but it did not look good. It’s been a nautical place for decades in beautiful Essex and would be a GREAT loss. Nonsuch was spoken there fluently.

Anyway, I would be happy to join any others in any tribute and honored work to facilitate it. Any ideas? There’s always the Gris.

If he doesn't already have one, a nice half-hull model with an inscription expressing appreciation from the "Nonsuch Nation" might be appreciated.

Anything ever come of this?  I'd love to come down to CT to hang with Jim and the Nonsuch gang!

According to this Nov 2019 discussion group thread, Jim Eastland's brokerage is closed.  It describes him as retired and in poor health.

I'm checking whether anything's been done in the past to acknowledge him.

I drove through Essex today and saw that Jim’s hangout, the Black Seal, was open and busy. I’ll try drop by next Friday afternoon and see if he is about or if anyone knows of his whereabouts.

I talked to a friend of Jim's who sees him once a week.  He reports that Jim, "at 86 is reasonably well if a bit mobility challenged."

I've sent Jim a message letting him know about this discussion thread.

Sorry to have to update the thread with this news, but I received word this morning that Jim passed away on the 19th of this month.

Mark Ellis, a good friend of his who'd been visiting him weekly, is composing an obit.   We'll get it into circulation as soon as we have it.

For what it's worth, in the message I sent Jim on the 30th, I'd told him about the people on this thread who'd asked after him.  Mark told me that Jim was "slow to reply these days," but he did see it.

So, at least he passed knowing that you folks were thinking of him.

Sorry to hear the bad news :(   Good to know that Jim knew people were thinking of him though.  Thanks for letting us know-

A huge loss for the Nonsuch community, I'm not sure if this is proper flag etiquette but it seems a fitting way to pay respect.IMG_0005.jpeg

I think it's very proper (and very kind, actually).
