Geetha VenkataramananThe hill temple vibrates with the crowd that starts arriving for Adi Krithigai, which is the following day. Thousands come, most of them carrying Kavadi, a phenomenon associated with Murugan. Gnanamalai looks fresh and clean, the ambience typical of a place, where Mandalabishekam is on after consecration. But this hill is special. Muruga is the Lord of Kurinji, the terrain of mountains and he has countless hilltops as His abode. Gnanamalai and the small temple stand out for the fact that this is the place Arunagirinathar mentions in one of his Tiruppugazh verses, a place that had been elusive for many years.

The Tiruppugazh referred to is ‘Manaiyaval Nagaikka...’ in which Arunagirinathar mentions Gnanamalai. This hill in Vellore district, however, remained as ‘Idam Vilanga Thalam’ until 1998, when an inscription gave a clue,” explains Valayapettai R. Krishnan, Tiruppugazh scholar and Murugan researcher. The author of several books on the subject, he thinks the ‘discovery’ of Gnanamalai, its development and consecration mark a milestone in his journey. On learning about an inscription on a rock of Gnanamalai, V. Muralidharan of Tiruvannamalai visited the spot. He came back with details, which made Krishnan go there for investigation. Convinced that this was the hill Arunagirinathar mentioned in the hymn, he set about the task of making it known to the public. The inscription found on a rock above an eternal spring says that Kalingarayan (1322-1340), son of Sambuvaraya Pazhayariayar, sculpted steps on the hillock to reach the temple of Sri Gnana Panditaswami. It is under the care of HR&CE Department.

Facilities created
In the past 20 years, the members of Siruvapuri Abisheka Committee and Gnanasramam Trust with the help and guidance of generous donors have built steps to the hill top and a motorable path besides facilitating water supply, etc. In this hill temple, Muruga is in an unusual form. With Valli on his left lap and the right arm round her waist, the deity is seated on his mount, the peacock and hence the name, Kuramagal Thazhuviya Kumaran.
After marrying Valli at Vallimalai, Muruga passes Gnanamalai, where he chooses to spend quiet days with his newly wed wife. “A honeymoon of sorts,” remarks Krishnan, who explains the Tiruppugazh link. A huge depression on the rocky surface here is worshipped as the footprint of Subramanya. Ecstatic on seeing the footprint, Arunagiri in the hymn beseeches to his favourite god to show His feet — the same feet, which saved his life at Tiruvannamalai. ‘Adiyanu Ninaithu Naalum Udaluyir Vidutha Podhu Anugi Mun Alitha Padam Arulvaye... goes the Tiruppugazh. The Lord responds by appearing with Valli on peacock proving right the Kandar Alankaram line — “Neela sigandiyileri Kola Kuratiyudan varuvan...” At a metaphysical level, Valli is the embodiment of Wisdom. The renovation committee has built a hall around the footprint for devotees to meditate.
At the foothill is Gnana Siddi Ganapati, facing West. He holds in his four arms axe, mango, cane and a bunch of flowers. The greenery makes the 150-step climb a pleasant experience. Pointing to the image of Gnana Dakshinamurti beneath a tree, Krishnan says, “The presence of this Kal-aala tree made us place the statue here. The biosphere has rare species of flowers and herbs,” he informs. Nelli is the sthala vriksham. The outline of the twin hills of far away Sholingur is hazily visible in the noon glare. Incidentally, Gnana Malai, Valli Malai and Tiruthani lie in a straight line.
First stop after the ascent is Gnana Saraswati, in a meditative posture. The original Gnana Panditha Swamy temple is a few yards away. Close by stands a huge spear — Gnanavel, a symbol of Wisdom. The Moolavar is Brahma Sasta form. “A common form in most of the temples of the South, built by Cholas and the Pallavas,” informs Krishnan. The deity in this Pallava structure is flanked by Valli and Devasena. South of this shrine is the temple for Kuramagal Thazhuviya Kumaran.
The hill temple has space for Gnanaveli Siddar (Paalai Siddar, whose guru was Arunagirinathar) peetam. This is marked by the presence of Gnanagiriswarar in the form of a lingam. Gnana Poongothai, Gnana Ganapati, Gnana Subramanyar and a beautiful sculpture of Vishnudurga complete the constellation. Paditiruvizha, Adikritigai and Skandasashti are celebrated with great fanfare.
The entire project, including the steps, Yoga Anubhuti Mantapam on the landing, the guest house at the foothill, which includes accommodation for the archaka’s family, and amenities for devotees have all been created over a period of time with generous donations. “Funds are needed to maintain the temple and the infrastructure and to conduct festivals and pujas. The hill, which is special in many ways, should be developed and more devotees should visit the place, where Arunagirinathar had a second glimpse of His feet,” says Krishnan, whose life-long mission is to spread the glory of Tiruppugazh and bring to light more places underlined by saint Arunagirinathar. 1. Number pyramid (Numerical Palindromes)
Don't you think this is amazing?
In this essay, I want to investigate the beauty of numbers.
Let's start our exploring from the above one.
Do you see the pattern?
First of all, the number of digits of the multiplied numbers are all odd.
Since digit is odd, if we pick the middle number, each side will contain an even number of digits; and those numbers are in reversed symmetrical order.
Let's see if it is really true for the infinite numbers by using EXCEL
(Chart one)

As we can see from the above, it seems true for all numbers.
Now why do you think this is true?
let's look at some smaller examples;
![]()

from the examples above, we can easily see the reason for the pattern.
To explain more explicitly, a 1 in a multiplier copies the multiplicand and shifts, so that the product copies the counting order of numbers -- 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. -- up to the number of ones in the multiplier, then reverses this counting order back to the starting 1.
We call this kind of numbers as "NUMERICAL PALINDROMES"
Let's look at some terms so that we can easily understand this.
Palindromic word = a string of letters which reads the same left to right or from right to left. ( for example, "POP", "DAD")
Palindromic sentence = a string of letters that separate as words, left to right or right to left. Thus "Madam Im Adam" is a short Palindromic sentence.
Numerical palindromes result from squares of identity strings, that is each a string of signs all the smae, such as 111, whose square is 111 * 111.
In the DNA code for genes, a palindromic coding prevents certain kinds of errors.
