The state of Horos and development and funding

Hi Horos Community,

This is an excerpt of an (mostly fund -raising solicitation) e-mail message I recently received from Purview, Chief Horos Sponsor:

"While we know that Horos is not perfect, we at Purview - Horos’s Chief Sponsor, together with our ever-expanding community, have done our best to ensure the product continues to operate and improve despite the many changes in chip technology and operating systems that Apple has thrown at us."

I've sporadically contributed to the Horos Project (several hundred dollars).

It's clear, in my view, that the Horos "development" Team (I have no insight into its composition) is unable to maintain a functional product. The notion of "...not perfect..." doesn't begin to describe the woeful state of the project.

I personally cannot even use it (I pay for and use OsiriX). See:

In GitHub, there are 442 Open Issues.

Would folks be willing to pay for Horos if it changed to a paid/subscription model ? And if the Team were thus able successfully to hire a sufficient number of software folks to fix and maintain it ?

I would pay for a more stable version of Horos

At one point in the past 9over 3 years ago), I worked on code fixes for Horos through Purview. Not much else has been changed in the code since then. While the main GitHub codebase for Horos is controlled by Purview, as an open-source project anyone can fork the project, make changes, and build their own Horos. I do offer software development services but currently have no time for this project.

As alternatives, I would suggest the following more up-to-date projects:

• miele-lxiv:  bettar/miele-lxiv: DICOM Viewer 64-bit fully open source (github.com): also based on OsiriX, available on the Mac Store  Miele-LXIV on the Mac App Store (apple.com). Though it does not seem to support the same set of plugins as Horos/OsiriX - I haven't had time to figure out how to get plugins I use on Horos to work with miele-lxiv.
• Weasis: another open-source viewer found at nroduit/Weasis: Weasis is a DICOM viewer available as a desktop application or as a web-based application. (github.com). It can also be downloaded build for a number of platforms at  Download Weasis DICOM Viewer :: Weasis Documentation.

Thank you for mentioning Miele, I just purchased it, and am happy to have an actively updated app to rely on again.

Never heard of Miele, thanks! It's updated for Sonoma, affordable and, as far as I can tell, compatible with the OrisiX/HOROS database structure. Will get it asap, to test!

There's another fork I've been using since Big Sur (now Sonoma), that is rock-solid, alas not updated. Please have a look at:

The only glitch is font rendering, on the database window, which is barely noticeable.

A quick note on HOROS/Purview: it was a valiant effort, I guess their business model relied on support and cloud storage (which most individual users don't need). I've donated. My take is that we should look elsewhere for small-office DICOM PACS/viewers.

This lack of updates seems to be a curse with all OsiriX-derived projects.. The curse of Osisis, I guess ;-)

I'm happy to, but it's difficult to know how often & how much. If there's a moderate fee that everyone pays, then I'm ready to join.
