液封 question and a laugh

Hi all,

I am translating a document for a research facility/laboratory. Nothing urgent, but I thought it might be of mild interest for some out in honyakkerdom.

Anyway, the word 液封 comes up. I have found an explanation in Japanese, but do not know of an English word that is equivalent to this term. Basically it has to do with the expansion of liquids/gases in sealed containers, such as those frozen or refrigerated; upon warming or cooling the temperature can trigger expansion and an explosion. Now how to say that in a word....

事故の原因になる液封というのは、配管などが液に満たされてしまう状態を指すようです。

ビン入りの飲料(ジュースやビール)などでは、ビンを飲料で満たすことはなく、必ず気体(窒素または炭酸ガスなど)を入れてあります。これは、ケチっているのではなく、すべてを液で満たしてしまうと、ちょっとした温度変化で内圧が急激に上昇して破裂したりするからです。

冷凍機の「液封」というのも、配管に一部に液が満たされた状態で弁などが閉止した結果、配管などの一部が完全に液で満たされてしまう状態を指すようで、このような場合、温度変化で冷媒が膨張したりすると破裂などの事故を起こすようです。

ちなみに、事故には結びつかない「液封」もあるので、混同しないように御注意ください。
(吸収式冷凍機などで、蒸気の移動を阻止する「液シール」を、「液封」ということがある。)

液封 normally refers to a “liquid ring”, i.e. a rotating ring of liquid that forms a compression chamber seal.

I think the definition Mick posted mentions at the bottom that there are other definitions of 液封, such as liquid seals.

We are looking for the definition of 事故の原因になる液封 here. A "sealed-in liquid causing accident"?

The characters “液封” do mean “liquid seal” and the word normally refers to a “liquid ring” type system.  In your case, I think you’ll have to use something that means “liquid obstruction” (clogging?)

A completely full bottle (or pipe) bursting when it's internal pressure rises suddenly due to a slight temperature change.  Seems a little different than "liquid obstruction," but I don't know the technical term. I'll keep thinking about it...
