Rick Langford (N8SDR),
Years ago on one of my three Hermes 2 Build 9 chassis’ had an ethernet jack that almost plugged in.
I could not find anything wrong until I noticed that the ethernet plug physically did not look the same as
another unit. Honestly I don’t think I would have found it for a while if I didn’t have two units side by side.
Plugging in the ethernet physically felt secure. The tab was not locked, but it felt good. I didn’t notice the tab not being locked. It took a lot more physical pressure to break the deformed plastic inside of the RJ45 Jack than I was
comfortable putting on it. It clicked and slid in locking the tab. And that solved the connection issue.
Steve’s advice in the troubleshooting network guide really works.

Since then my Hermes 2 fleet of three is now 4. I have prepared my Fleet of HL2’s such that initially I disconnected all but one HL2 from the network, then I connected my computer to that HL2, changed the mac address, set up a reservation in my DHCP, set the HL2 to DHCP. Confirming that it worked, then one by one, added the HL2’s to the network. When I was done, they all had unique MAC address’ and they all had DHCP issued address’, and then I changed them all to Hard Coded IP address’. Since none of them has the Default MAC address, adding a new one just works.
One of the other issues is that after a configuration change involving the IP address or mac address, I physically remove the power to insure that the configuration is applied. In the past a soft power off, reboot does not always insure that the mac address or IP address gets changed. A physical power off always does.
