New radio received yesterday.

Will not connect to network.
Even SPARK will not see the radio.

No Firewall enabled..

I turned off FW to make sure that wasn't a problem.
I have a few other rigs and several other items connected via a business class switch-

Also, I'm fairly smart with networking- as I run my I/T business and been in that field almost 28 years.

I switch out ethernet cables and even ran a cable test on them- all pass tests.

Any ideals

Please follow the troubleshoot network guide here:

and report to the group the state of the 4 LEDs when powering up normally and when powering up in recovery mode. Short CW/PTT jack tip, ring, shield together before applying power and keep shorted for 5-10 seconds after applying power to enter recovery mode. I usually use a standard stereo audio cable and short one end with aluminum foil.

Finally, please try a direct connection to your PC (no switch) and see if Spark finds the APIPA address. I have a recollection that there is something problematic with high end switches.

You can search this group via the web interface for past reports of no network connection:

Hello Steve

hopefully the quick video will attach.

the status DL lights look correct.

It appears in an IDLE state.

I have done the shorting of CN4 several times, always the same issue.

I even directly connected- and to make sure not a PC issue- I even tried my laptop.

my (2) 2DX sdr's which I required manually setting IP address and subnets are still connected as well as  XR12 ad a few other network items which are all cabled.

Its like in LIMBO state

Rick Langford (N8SDR),

Years ago on one of my three Hermes 2 Build 9 chassis’ had an ethernet jack that almost plugged in.

I could not find anything wrong until I noticed that the ethernet plug physically did not look the same as

another unit. Honestly I don’t think I would have found it for a while if I didn’t have two units side by side.

Plugging in the ethernet physically felt secure. The tab was not locked, but it felt good. I didn’t notice the tab not being locked. It took a lot more physical pressure to break the deformed plastic inside of the RJ45 Jack than I was

comfortable putting on it. It clicked and slid in locking the tab. And that solved the connection issue.

Steve’s advice in the troubleshooting network guide really works.

https://github.com/softerhardware/Hermes-Lite2/wiki/Troubleshoot-Network

Since then my Hermes 2 fleet of three is now 4. I have prepared my Fleet of HL2’s such that initially I disconnected all but one HL2 from the network, then I connected my computer to that HL2, changed the mac address, set up a reservation in my DHCP, set the HL2 to DHCP. Confirming that it worked, then one by one, added the HL2’s to the network. When I was done, they all had unique MAC address’ and they all had DHCP issued address’, and then I changed them all to Hard Coded IP address’. Since none of them has the Default MAC address, adding a new one just works.

One of the other issues is that after a configuration change involving the IP address or mac address, I physically remove the power to insure that the configuration is applied. In the past a soft power off, reboot does not always insure that the mac address or IP address gets changed. A physical power off always does.

Hi,

The LEDs are in a state where it came up in either fixed IP or APIPA mode. This can happen when a cable is not fully inserted as jpw found.

When you connected directly to a laptop or PC, was it running Windows or Linux? Linux can be a little finicky with APIPA and you may have to configure the computer to be in the same subnet. The expected APIPA address is 169.254.19.221.

Please send a high resolution photo of U4, the ethernet MAC chip near the jack and surrounding area. I'd like to confirm it is a KSZ9021. Since D3 is blinking at twice the rate of D4, the iset resistor is the proper value for a KSZ9021, but you can see the problems you are seeing (and still pass the factory test with a short ethernet cable to raspberry pi) if a KSZ9031 is installed.

Have you installed any other gateware or made any mods to your board?

I just shipped a board back to Europe with the same issue your report. The user said he had tried recovery boot without luck, but all I had to do was recovery boot and clear a fixed IP. It could have been a bad audio cable or some other procedural misunderstanding in this case. So I am a little apprehensive that this may be another case of not doing recovery boot properly. Please try again and be certain that all three pins of CN4 are shorted before you apply power, and kept shorted for ~10 seconds after applying power.

Since you are experienced with networking, do you see any DHCP request coming from the device in Wireshark?

Hello

I soldered all 3 pins on the jack

So I can use as a reset/recovery in future if needed.

I agree it certainly looks to be in a state of idleness. Awaiting a run trigger.

No mods no updates as I wanted first to check things.

Wireshark I can certainly look at.

I won't be back until late Sunday night as doing field day over weekend.

I wanted to reply so I didn't leave things hanging.

I will report back after I return home and run Wireshark.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Have a great weekend.

UPDATE:

Good morning.
I left the shorted-out jack plugged in after powering on the Hermes this morning- for around 3 minutes.

unplugged the jack and powered off. Still nothing in Thetis so I checked Spark while directly connected to my laptop.
Making sure that the onboard laptop Nic card in DHCP.

Spark see the Hermes now in APIPA mode.
so, progress at least

I tried powering down and placing the Hermes back on my networked system- and again nothing.

So back over to laptop and spark- in Spark I manual set a static IP address that would be available on my network,
powered down- placed Hermes on my network and launched Thetis and successfully found and was able to run and it is working.

I just can't get DHCP to work with it, which for now I'm not worried about as I have everything that is wired on a static IP anyways.
and I added the Mac address to the network switch as well.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Today is install the Audio Codec board and hopefully Spark will allow me to do the gateway update.!

Rick,

That's good news that you are connected.  Mine came from the same new batch and I have it connected direct to the PC via ethernet cable.  I tried to set the standard default IP for the radio as a fixed IP address,  it worked but next boot up would not connect so I changed to DHCP and let it do it's thing and it found the same IP address and is now working fine.  Have to say I wish there were other good software packages for the Hermes on Mac as it worked seamlessly with the SunSDR, but for now its working and Thetis is a nice piece of software.  I'm waiting on my CB add on to arrive so I can get going on CW.

I have used TCI to connect the HLS and Thetis to LOG4OM so hopeful SDC will work too.

Alan.

Hi Rick,

I'm glad the static IP is working for you. I assume you then removed the shorted-out jack plug as recovery mode will ignore any static IP setting?

Just FYI for you and the group, the HL2 does not contain a CPU which runs DHCP code. It is a finite state machine in the FPGA RTL. Consequently the HL2 DHCP is much more basic than what you'd find on a device with CPU or microcontroller. Most of the DHCP problems arise from the "DHCP Options" as described on wikipedia:

A few years ago the gateware was updated to do a good job of ignoring unknown options, but if a particular DHCP server requires a client to discover or request with a particular option, the HL2 won't do that. I suspect that is what is happening in your case.

Please note that removing components on your HL2 board to install an aftermarket product voids the limited warranty. You may want to use your HL2 as-is at least for a few weeks to make sure everything is working.

After reading your issue, especially after finding that fixing the IP address seemed to work, I would have to ask if you have a "Managed Switch" anywhere on you network?

I use a managed switch it is a Cisco 2960 catalyst.

In the fine print, in the bowels of the internet, there is a line that explains that you should NOT use a Managed Switch with Anan's and also for the Hermes Lite 2 SDR radios. It has to do with the radio advertising an invalid MAC address 11:22:33:44:55:66 on startup and the Managed Switch refuses to route the communication to the DHCP server. The symptom is that the computer can't find the radio and in fact the ARP table is not populated with the radio MAC and IP addresses. You can check by manually inserting the information into the ARP table. However, using a fixed IP or a Dumb Switch solves that problem!  --Larry W8ER

If the default MAC is really 11:22:33:44:55:66 then that could be the cause. This is not a unicast MAC. Changing it to "10:22:33:44:55:66" would be a better option. Or even "00:10:8f:12:34:56" -- this uses an EUI that I got registered in the 90s for a company that has since been swallowed up a number of times....

Hi All,

All HL2s spoof the MAC 00:1c:c0:a2:13:dd. You can set which MAC to spoof via SparkSDR, Quisk or hermeslite.py. The HL2 gateware is now quite different from Anan.

Larry, I understood the Anan's only use the MAC 11:22:33:44:55:66 when placed in bootloader mode (and it's not used for normal operation) - I think this is muddying the water as far as HL2 is concerned.
Steve has conformed the MAC the HL2 'spoofs' and I guess that if you have two HL2's on your network, a managed switch might well get confudled by that and would be worth changing one of the HL2's MAC.

Nigel ... I have not seen anything to suggest that the spoof only occurs in "bootloader" mode. We'll know for sure once Rick tries the various solutions proposed or uses Wireshark, and reports to us if that's his problem. It appears that he is using a Managed Switch in addition to some fairly exotic security software that could be responsible. I just received Steve's  response and it appears that he fully aware of that issue and that the Hermes Lite 2 firmware has addressed it.

Larry, my Anan 200D in normal run mode has a MAC address which is entirely different to the supposed bootload address.
However, as this is not HL2 related, I'll leave it there  ;-)
