I nominate Luis Montes (senior) for the role of Co-Champion should the upcoming vote-of-no-confidence of the current seat-holder pass.

A few HYH ago the petition was officially considered verified which means nominations are open, I believe the board will be announcing the scheduling of the actual vote soon.

Luis has served on the board in the past, has been consistently involved, he has nominated countless cardholders who were all voted yes, him and Mala have kept Caffeine&Coworking running strong for nearly 15 years, every week without fail.

Luis has also championed endeavors that led to the lab receiving upwards of 30K in donation. He has put tons of his own money and time into the lab.

The man lives and breathes HeatSync. It would be unfair not to mention that at times he can butt heads but he is always open to resolution and I've seen him admit when he is wrong (it is possible i swear). If you feel uneasy about this nomination for whatever reason I hope that you'll try and reach out to Luis directly, meet him for coffe/tea/beer/whatever and talk it out. If not for the sake of the vote, do it at least to meet him IRL and learn what an awesome, passionate (loud mouth :P), caring, and brilliant guy he can be.

I've personally butt-heads with him at times but we have always found resolution and it has never affected our friendship. I am obviously quite biased, Luis mentored me and I am the engineer I am today thanks to him.

Outside of the lab Luis fosters strong relationships with the community. He runs Bike Mesa with some amazing folks in the area, and he is known well throughout Downtown Mesa as a pillar of the community. I know having him on the board will help repair any damage to our reputation as well as open new avenues of community growth and collaboration.

He has exemplified the idea of what it is to be a Champion at HeatSync. Everyone at HeatSync should be a champion, the formal board title of Champion is meant to act as the example others should follow. No body is perfect and we all have our moments, but I can confidently say that Luis will do the role well because he has in the past and continues to show up for the lab. At the end of the day he does care deeply about the ENTIRE membership and maintaining the values of the space. I believe he is someone who will never weaponize procedural authority or overstep in a way that would be counter to our do-ocracy and consensus based governance. I know that he will tackle serious issues with the urgency, compassion, and care that they demand.

TLDR; Vote for Luis even if hes a donkey's butt sometimes he is HSL thru and thru. His contributions to HSL and the larger Mesa community have genuinely transformed this place in fabulous ways. I 100% love the guy, but even if I hated him I'd want him for the board because his track record speaks for itself.

Oh additionally he has been a champion of javascript to the larger global community with his work with nodebots and creative coding projects. I believe he is part of why web-usb and web-bluetooth became a thing. He has brought that back to the lab by getting folks like Sandeep Mistry, Noopkat, and others to come speak at the lab or lab adjacent events like IoTDevFest.

He also has run countless hackathons at the lab like nodebots day.

When I was on the board with Luis, he was a good dude and supportive of me and the mission of HSL.

I endorse him for board!

I fully endorse Luis even if this is a "just in case" nomination. I also served on the Board with Luis previously and we took on some tough projects together with other members, as members of the Lab. Like building our coworking tables and leading moving locations. Luis is super welcoming and is HSL to his core.

I have some questions for anyone nominated for the board that I am interested in. Hoping Luis can answer them for us, along with other nominees:

Are you accepting this nomination?
What drew you to wanting to serve on the board specifically, rather than staying involved as a member? (worded for a new board member, but still applies because it would be nice to hear your thoughts about being on the board previously)
How do you see the board member role as different from regular membership?
What does it mean to you to be a trustee for the membership? Can you give an example of a situation where that framing would change how you would act?
How would you describe the board's relationship to the broader membership?
How would you approach a situation where you believed a bylaw change was urgent and necessary? Walk me through your process.
What makes a code of conduct enforcement process feel legitimate to the people it governs and how would you personally ensure that it is applied consistently?

Thanks for the nomination, Moheeb.

I do accept.  And I appreciate the kind words, Mike, Jay, and Milton.

I'll answer the questions inline.

Indeed.

What drew you to wanting to serve on the board specifically, rather than staying involved as a member? (worded for a new board member, but still applies because it would be nice to hear your thoughts about being on the board previously)

I served four terms a few years ago, and I wasn't really seeking to be on the board now. Being a board member is a thankless volunteer service, not leadership, but I'll cover the open seat well.

How do you see the board member role as different from regular membership?

The board's role should be extremely limited. We exist to fulfill our 501c3 obligations and to handle things like code of conduct violations that have to go through the board. Otherwise decisions belong at HYH, not with the board.

What does it mean to you to be a trustee for the membership? Can you give an example of a situation where that framing would change how you would act?

It means the members trust me to act in the space's interest, not my own. So if a code of conduct case involved a friend, or me, I'd hold the same standard and step back from any decision where I had a stake.

How would you describe the board's relationship to the broader membership?

The board serves the membership and is there to be reachable, not to govern it. Members decide things at HYH, and the board's job is to be available and accountable to them.

How would you approach a situation where you believed a bylaw change was urgent and necessary? Walk me through your process.

A bylaw change goes through HYH and the proposal process no matter how urgent it feels, because that process is deliberate by design. If something is a genuine safety emergency, the board can act on that immediately under the code of conduct, but that is separate from changing a bylaw.

What makes a code of conduct enforcement process feel legitimate to the people it governs and how would you personally ensure that it is applied consistently?

The appeals process is what legitimizes it: if a member feels a ruling wronged them, they can take it to the wider membership. Consistency comes from applying the same standard to everyone, board members included, and documenting decisions so they can be reviewed.

I think we should have fewer old hats, and try to have more new people on the board. I believe he cares more about his own group and interests more than other parts of the lab, which he has openly disparaged. I think the way he deals with conflict is entirely immature and inappropriate and has driven people from the space before. However, I served on the board with Luis and he did well, and I like him personally. But beyond that, we REALLY need to stop having multi-year board members. Think about that for treasurer, folks. Just my input.

Also, for many years, we have discouraged others from nominating people for the board. They often do not perform very well, since they didn't want the position in the first place. If they do, they can declare their own candidacy.

Shaundra,
I would encourage you not spread negativity about people via the public forum regardless of how vaguely. I have made this mistake and know why we shouldn't do it. Despite the recent examples of this happening it is preferred that people bring their concerns to the relevant HYH for discussion instead.

I support Luis for the champion role. I appreciate my time being a board member with him.

You know I am bedridden and have no other voice. Running for/being part of an office is a public thing, as was made clear by the recent events. The declaration is made in writing, and the discussion happens in writing, as usual. Pointing out my legitimate concerns in a totally civilized manner is certainly not "negative," even if you disagree with it, and you trying to take away my voice when you know I am bedridden is frankly ableist. I am lending my concerns as an eight-year board member and people have a right to hear something other than an echo chamber. Do not try to silence people, thank you. We have always had relevant discussions before HYH, not during.

Shaundra has stated that though she believes Luis' internal intent/priorities are isolated to his own area of focus, he is still someone she personally likes and that he served well on the board. Thats very in the spirit of HSL, we can disagree on some stuff and might not have the best opinions of eachother in certain areas, but at the end of the day those that care about the lab and the community serve it well.

I will only disagree with your statement /that those that self-nominate serve better/, I'm a big proponent of the lessons learned from Cincinatus, essentially those that seek authority are often least suited for it. I know as a matter of fact Luis specifically has not run for the board in years so that others could have a chance to serve, same reason I stepped down, but in the context of why this nomination needs to happen I believe he is best suited, he doesnt want this job, trust me, but he can do it well until we get to the next election in October.

Eric makes a good point about contentious claims that require substantiation (wether true or not)  are better suited to in-person when possible to avoid a lengthy heated back and forth on the mailing list but just as well Shaundra makes a very good point about accessibility and the norm to be transparent about your thoughts on the mailing list. This and HYH are the official venues of debate, but we should adhere to the general rules of healthy debate and refrain from anything that can be perceived as ad hominem etc etc

https://lumencanvas.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/artifacts/hsl15.html

Wanted to add, if you look at the data presented in this link, you'll see that a lot of the peaks in growth and much of the hours and programming at the lab can be attributed to efforts spearheaded by Luis or during the time of his tenure on the board. Luis has historically always brought in more members and fostered them. He is an avid enabler (sometimes to a fault lol) of people who want to do stuff at the lab.

Luis has consistently spent time at the lab in person meeting and interacting with people within the space and supporting them. Its no secret that he has a blunt nature in his messaging style which can easily be misconstrued (can say that about most people that frequent the online comms). This has led to some isolated interpersonnal problems which I think can easily be solved with a conversation. This is to be expected in a large and diverse community.

In person Luis is very nice albeit occasionally cras but has always treated people with respect, even those he disagrees with. When I have had heated disagreements with him, he does keep an open mind and we are able to resolve things in a pretty healthy manner. Believe it or not we disagree on quite a bit even stuff unrelated to the lab. Recently I misguidedly overstepped and moved the Bike Station that he currently champions without discussing with him. He was upset, made it clear it wasnt cool. We talked it out rather quickly, he didnt like it but he understood my reasoning and would adapt to find a better place for it if he can and he didn't hold resentment towards me or attack me over it.

The day time hours hes hosted for the last 15 or so years have always had a great turnout with probably like 50-100 different people that come out, some regularly, some occasionally, but I've seen people who show up during C&C show up at night. Its been an invaluable part of our regular and consistent programming. Its often the re-entry point for many members who return after hiatus.

I have also seen him support other stations and make a point to respect them, counter to what I've heard from others. I can only speak to what I have seen. He is always quick to contribute to the lab. Beyond the 30k donation, he spent thousands on furniture for the lab, on hackathons, and various other things. Not to say one should be able to buy favor, but hes never done it for favor, hes done it because he saw a need. I've probably boasted about it on his behalf more than he has, because most people have no idea what hes contributed financially.

TLDR, to repeat what I said in my original post, sometimes he can be a donkey's butt, but hes HSL through and through and has always fought for the members and for the space and has genuinely been a major contributor in why HeatSync is still around.

You rather twisted my words and their intent around, Moheeb. Furthermore, I was certain to say nothing that could even be construed as ad hominem. And you say "whether true or not," but that's kind of what an insult hinges on: truth. That is to say, the conversation Luis and I just had privately was far more exciting than this. I did nothing wrong and I will not be told I even danced near impropriety. I voiced what MANY people have said to me. Many people are hurting. He has hurt people through his words and actions, and he has been complacent when his friend group does the same, knowing about it. Leaders don't let their friends be hurtful either. You're the one who made this public, Moheeb. You're the one who nominated someone who engages in or observes bullying behavior, and you did it in a public thread. You want people who are good all the time to be on the board, and anyone who says or does hurtful things to others to not be on the board, so that's why we're here.

Furthermore, I think no one related to recent affairs should run; it will invoke lack of trust. For a group to spearhead the effort to oust a board member creates a total conflict of interest for any of those people to run in that person's stead. If we ever want this issue to die down, how can you even think this is a good idea? So many people are upset, and not just about this latest issue. It looks like one group grabbing power by any means necessary. It's not a good optic, even though that may not be the intent. I am not convinced it is not the intent and many who have messaged me are also not sure of the intent. Whether you all were right or wrong about the DL thing, it was aggressive, escalatory and was forced into the public. Then it became immature, heated and lost us many members. You guys can say DL was selfish, but so were you. Your conception of decency and your need to play white knight was more important than all those memberships we lost. None of you are good for office right now and should let it rest. I certainly will do the same in October. There are plenty of people who have been absent or are new. I won't nominate them, because I want it to be voluntary, not coerced.

Luis can continue to be beneficial and has done those beneficial things while not on the board. Just like you said DL isn't good in a position of power, a person who lets people do harmful things, or engages in them, is also not good in a position of power. I don't see how we need all these old-timers on the board. Not only should Luis not be on the board, someone else should run for treasurer too. This is how organizations become echo chambers and environments that benefit long-timers. It's how people become cynical and burnt out. A totally neutral person should replace DL if it comes to that. Someone who wants to all on their own.

And you can nobly say you want to nominate people who don't crave power (though this is not Luis at all, though he usually uses other ways) but you went against our long-lived desire to not force people into uncomfortable situations without their consent. Him agreeing doesn't mean it's anyone's place to pressure anyone else into the board and we've had this position for many, many years. But of course no one consulted the board. In fact, the board used to replace board members and now we don't do that anymore, and no one even checked about the logistics or specifications for this brand-new method. You guys keep undercutting the board and it's unskillful at best, unkind at worst.

You guys want anonymity, fine. Luis challenged me to make a survey about him, so I think I will. It will be anonymous. You will find that most people love and support Luis. I think most people love Luis, even me, but you will find a disturbing percentage that believe things about him that are not cool. Things that hurt people as much as the DL rhetoric thing, or even more.

Shaundra, why are you picking a fight?  Just nominate someone who you think is better.  If you think Lang or someone else is better, just say so.  At the end of the day the post has to and will be filled.  We don't vote against someone, we vote for someone, so it is a waste of time and very counterproductive to harp on why you think a candidate is bad without putting forward a candidate you think is good.  This is not about your ego.

It's probably worth mentioning that Luis wanted to be nominated, so this was not done without his knowledge.

He volunteered to be nominated, it wasn't like this was done out of the blue.

Fwiw, I'm not even involved in the lab anymore and I think that this sort of discussion in public is inappropriate and it makes me not want to be involved in the lab anymore.

Anyway, peace and good luck to all.

Like Shaundra said, you don’t need to be nominated to run for office. Just announce your candidacy and your goals if you’re elected. It’s pretty simple. I’ve known Luis and have seen him at his best and worst. You will need to rely on your own judgment when voting. I look forward to hearing about Luis’ thoughts on the future of the lab.

No it doesn’t. The bylaws state that the office of champion may have multiple officers, but it’s not strictly required.

If the choices are between two inadequate candidates, then it would probably be better to leave the seat open.

the 'none of the above' (aka explicit abstain) vote option should still apply,
or did your proposal eliminate that voting option without making it obvious?

That was a really awesome HYH, and it was wonderful to see everyone.

Thanks to Antonio for running the meeting so well, and to everyone for respecting each other and being kind.

Rick, I hope you consider running for the board again in Oct, I think you are really great and I really appreciate your involvement in the lab throughout the years.

-Mike
