George,
Thank you for your feedback on your preliminary testing throughout the day. The MIEX Water Treatment System (WTS) does not soften water. Toho chose to maximize treatment with the MIEX WTS for its ability to remove organics and hydrogen sulfide (H2S); unfortunately, softening cannot be accomplished with the Ion Exchange Resin used in the MIEX process.
Hard water is caused by minerals in the water. Calcium and magnesium are the usual culprits. On a personal note living in the St Cloud service area I have also experienced calcium build up on my shower heads due to the hard water here in our area. However, I have found a great all natural solution that prevents me from having to make any replacements. If I notice that my shower heads are not working as efficiently due to visible calcium build up I will soak them for approximately 30 minutes in a white vinegar and water solution. Usually one part vinegar and four parts water. This has been a great alternative to buying a new shower head. There are many cleaners out there that help remove hard water deposits but I prefer to stick to more natural methods.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thank you.
