Yeah!

Thank you Mary!

Please thank all of your staff as well for what surely must have been very hard work over the weekend. I am sure that I speak for all Harmony residents when I say that clean running water is something that we too easily take for granted. Only when it is unavailable even for a few days do we truly appreciate how central it is to our everyday lives.

Thanks again Mary. Preliminary testing throughout the day suggests that the water looks and smells great!

I was looking into past discussions about the new MIEX treatment process just implemented and I found 2 things:

    1) My concern about chloramine filtration is now moot
since Toho wisely (IMHO) chose to use chlorine
instead of chloramines as a disinfectant.

    2) My question about the impact of the new process on
water hardness was never answered (see "Request for Mary
    Guidone - 2012-02-29",  http://tinyurl.com/m73mtg5 ).

Here's what I wrote early last year:

You make a valid point Roy. As I recall, we lost one
shower head before we installed a whole house water
softener. We have had no problems since. I am pretty
sure that it's the hard water that clogs the shower
    heads.

Perhaps Mary can also let us know if any of the
proposed new methods of water treatment will reduce
    our water's significant hardness.

Can we get an answer now to the water hardness question Mary?

Does the new MIEX process implemented by Toho also solve Harmony's extreme water hardness problem? Or does each new homeowner in Harmony still need to spend a large wad of cash on a water softener system for their newly built home (if they want to avoid the problems Roy and others have had over the years)?

George,

Thank you for your feedback on your preliminary testing throughout the day. The MIEX Water Treatment System (WTS) does not soften water.  Toho chose to maximize treatment with the MIEX WTS for its ability to remove organics and hydrogen sulfide (H2S); unfortunately, softening cannot be accomplished with the Ion Exchange Resin used in the MIEX process.

Hard water is caused by minerals in the water. Calcium and magnesium are the usual culprits. On a personal note living in the St Cloud service area I have also experienced calcium build up on my shower heads due to the hard water here in our area. However, I have found a great all natural solution that prevents me from having to make any replacements.  If I notice that my shower heads are not working as efficiently due to visible calcium build up I will soak them for approximately 30 minutes in a white vinegar and water solution.  Usually one part vinegar and four parts water.  This has been a great alternative to buying a new shower head. There are many cleaners out there that help remove hard water deposits but I prefer to stick to more natural methods.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thank you.

I wish your method for treating showerheads could be applied practically and easily to dishwashers, washing machines, showers, bathtubs, sinks and the inside of water heaters. But even if it could, I think the effort would be Herculean.

Thank you anyway for your honest answer Mary.

FYI, I just noticed a container of water we saved from before the outage Mary.

Hard water issues aside, I am happy to report that our new MIEX treated water tastes substantially better. There is no hint of sulfide now. Granted, the water I am tasting from my tap has been though our whole house carbon filter / softener, but the same was true of the old water I just found and tasted again.

Please pass my thanks along to everyone you work with Mary. I think we have finally arrived at an aesthetically high level of water quality in Harmony. Hopefully Toho passes its DEP tests with flying colors as well. Good luck!
