Hi

I closed down my fathers dark room where amongst several enlargers, developing chemicals were thousands of slides.  I put most of the equipment on Craig’s list and was surprised of the number of inquiries I received for old slides showing street scenes or other common place sites.  Young photographers and artists were looking for before and after shots.

So you might consider putting the slides on Craig’s list.

As for the negatives and slides, I took them apart, recycled the paper frames, and put film part in an envelop thinking someday I’ll find a place to take them so some of the silver can be recovered.

The plastic slide frames I am saving for a future art project.  Think chainmail.

Do you know if there is a proper place to send old slides/photos for
    recycling?

Go to Pinterest and search "old photo slides" and you will find many ideas
    how these can be re-used.
    http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=old%20photo%20slides&rs=ac&len=15

Pinners who are crafters may want to take them off you.

This pinner has a dedicated board for 35mm-slides...

...and you will see that Jade Planet's is making money out of them by
creating fashion bags. Small evening bag (left), $32. Film shopper, $64.

That's a potential buyer of old slides. Warning: P for Pinterest. P for
prison. They are the same. Can get stuck for a period there.

Also, google "recycle old slides and photos" for images for more ideas and
    links.

A colleague at Temple University was able to have the silver recowered in thousands of old X rays by using this company:
