Ed:Have these principles actually been approved by the entire Stow RTC? I know I have some thoughts.Perhaps we should bring these up before the whole RTC before we talk about them as a fait accompli. And because of my other commitments next Wednesday night, I would appreciate the opportunity to speak to them before they are adopted. Here are some alternative that may be worth considering, but they can be tinkered with:I'm a Republican Because...
- I BELIEVE the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.
- I BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.
- I BELIEVE free enterprise and encouraging individual initiative have brought this nation opportunity, economic growth and prosperity.
- I BELIEVE government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money they earn.
- I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations, and that the best government is that which governs least.
- I BELIEVE the most effective, responsible and responsive government is government closest to the people.
- I BELIEVE Americans must retain the principles that have made us strong while developing new and innovative ideas to meet the challenges of changing times.
- I BELIEVE Americans value and should preserve our national strength and pride while working to extend peace, freedom and human rights throughout the world.
- FINALLY, I believe the Republican Party is the best vehicle for translating these ideals into positive and successful principles of government.
- We believe our courts should be used to resolve genuine conflicts rather than to redistribute wealth via a “legal lottery”.
- We believe individuals should be held accountable for their own actions.
- We realize that by removing the consequences from individuals’ bad decisions, only more bad decisions will result.
- We know that Reagan was right: "Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."
- We believe good policy requires that government be held accountable for its actions.
- We know that if you think health care is expensive now, just wait until you see what it costs when it's "free".
Principled Conservatism
1. Just government protects Individual Sovereignty, Private Property and the Rule of Law.
2. When government is not granted an authority by Constitution, government cannot claim it.
3. Government must be no larger than required to carry out its Constitutional Obligations.
4. A Free Society cannot be “perfect.” A “perfect” society cannot be free. Individual Liberty is a higher value than collectivist “perfection.”
5. In a Free Society, one must respect the Liberty of others to live by values different than one’s own.
6. Personal Liberty and Economic Liberty are inseparable.
7. All government policy must be debated, judged, and justified by these Principles.
These are more simple, less dogmatic, and far less alienated. It may be worth paring down the principles we adopt into more or less the "central idea" that Lincoln talked about.

This is my two cents.
