Sorry.
Is there any way to search by the size of the message, then? I'm
getting pretty low on space, myself.
IIRC, when POP (from GMail) was first introduced, people indicated
they could switch to US-English, set the POP up, and switch languages
back. The feature would remain in effect, but couldn't see
configuration in web anymore. Until it was translated into their
language.

Not totally what you're looking for but one option I use is to first
figure which file types are going to be taking up most space. Then do
search that.
filename:.jpg
filename:.mpg
filename:.pps
Whatever you need to get rid of.
Unfortunately, you could get large returns and have no idea what to
get rid of to really save space.
I also found that emptying the trash rids my account of tons of space
when I remember to do that.
With Gmail still in Beta (and of course a web based email client) I've
pointed my Apple Mail client to my gmail.com address and periodically
download all sent and received mail to my MacBook. This is the only
reason I open Mail, other than to email images from iPhoto, Google
Earth and so on - messages which naturally then get uploaded to my
Gmail account.
The result, a handful of sent items in Mail... and several thousand in
my inbox which I'm quite happy to leave there. All of a sudden all
those emails (and they are individual emails, rather than parts of a
string/conversation) can be sorted any which way I choose - including
by size. Once I've found the biggest ten, which I may not have needed
for a year or two, I can track them down in Gmail and hit delete.
Is it a faff to do this? Not really when you consider the space
saving. Plus you get a backup of those emails and files that you're
deleting from Gmail, in fact you get a backup of everything, which is
the point underlying all this, which is both safe from a global
collapse of all things Google (or more usefully can be accessed when
you're offline). If space on your machine is at a premium too, it's
probably time to invest in an external drive.
It works for me.
D.
I'm a magazine editor and have lots of multimedia files in Gmail. I've
hit 98% full three times now. The first time I tried to download
everything into Outlook, but Gmail locked me out after I hit 100mb or
so, saying i had exceeded my download usage (as stipulated in their
user agreement). To add insult to injury, they locked my account for
24 hours.
So I haven't tried that again.
But I agree that it was useful as a double-backup and for sorting
emails by size, so you can then isolate and delete the big ones in
Gmail.
My solution since then has been to add the label "_large files" to any
email with a hefty attachment (150k+), as I receive it. That way, when
you get into the 90s again, you can work your way through the "_large
files" label and delete what is expendable.
Not perfect but it works, until such times as Google drops the "never
delete a thing" bravado and adds a size filter.
Cheers,
PDR

Can't wait to try it on my work computer. Nothing happens when I try
and install GM scripts on my home comp. V.frustrating.

Had a go at the suggestions, but no joy. :-(
