Hello everyone!

I'm working on a home range analysis for a dolphin population using the methods in workbook 4 ("Investigating home ranges of individual animals"). My question is, is there a way to do this for many individuals at once, or do I have to do it one individual at a time? I'm also open to using R if it's possible to do it there, though I am more comfortable using ArcGIS (or QGIS). Secondly, can anyone point me in the direction of papers that discuss how to determine restrictions for this analysis? In other words, should I only include inviduals who have been sighted X number of times?

Thank you!
Jessica

Hi Jessica,

If you wish to automate the process of calculating home ranges so you can run it on multiple individuals, there are two parts to the process. Firstly, you will need to build a model that carries out all the steps you wish to do to create your home ranges. This can be done with Model Builder in ArcGIS or Graphical Model Builder in QGIS. It can be tricky to get your model to work. but once you have it, you will have a single tool that you can access to do all the steps you wish to do. This is when you can move onto the next step,. which is the use Batch Processing to run your custom tool repeatedly with different data sets while you go away have any some coffee. This is relatively simple to do, and in ArcGIS in can be done by right clicking on  the name of your custom tool and electing Batch Processing from the options. I think this option can be accessed in QGIS in a similar. way.

If you are using ArcGIS, and you wish to avoid creating your own custom tools for creating home ranges following the processes from Workbook 4, there is a custom toolbox I created a few years ago to do this. I don't know if it is still functional with the latest version of ArcGIS, but even if it isn't it might give you a good starting point for how to build versions of these tools for yourself. You can find out more information about this toolbox by searching for Home Range Toolbox in this forum. If the link to the toolbox itself doesn't work from the post you find, email me at cdma...@GISinEcology.com and I can send it to you directly.

All the best,

Colin

Hi Jessica,

I don't have the Workbook, so I cannot comment on that part of your question. However, I would like to ask what method(s) you are going to use for determining home range size? KDE (95%/50%)? MCP? Minimum Concave Hull? LoCoH? I used to use the rhr package in R for MCP and KDE estimates, but do not know how to use it for multiple individuals automatically. Normally the number of individuals is small enough that I just run it individually.

Regards,
Chavoux
