Dear New Member,
Thank you for joining the GIS In Ecology Forum.
This forum was set up by GIS In Ecology (see
www.GISinEcology.com for
more information) in November 2011 to act as a place where people who
are interested in using GIS in their ecological or marine biological
research could discuss issues that might arise with other people in a
similar position.
While anyone is welcome to join, this forum is primarily aimed at the
ecological research community. It is moderated to ensure that only
messages that comply with the following rules and that are likely to
be of interest to this community will be posted.
This forum is intended to primarily be to share information about
using GIS and most posts are likely to relate to questions and answers
about how to do specific tasks in GIS (such as 'How to I calculate the
home ranges of individual animals in my study population using GIS?').
As a member, you are welcome to post such questions or provide others
with answers based on your own experiences
When posting such questions, please provide as much background
information as possible. At a minimum all such posts must include the
GIS software you are using (e.g. 'ArcGIS 10') and the operating system
for your computer (e.g. 'Windows 7'). It is also useful to others to
know what species you are working with, where abouts in the world you
are working, what research question you are studying and why you are
studying it (e.g. as part of a Ph.D. or for a consultancy project).
Such questions are posted by clicking on the +NEW POST button at the
top right of the forum’s home page (
http://groups.google.com/group/gis-
in-ecology-forum?hl=en). Alternatively, you can email your question to
gis-in-eco...@googlegroups.com.
When posting an answer to someone’s questions, the best way to do so
is by using the REPLY option at the bottom of a message (you may need
to create an account and sign in order to see this option). However,
you can also post a reply to the following email address: gis-in-
ecolog...@googlegroups.com. Please remember that all messages are
archived in a publicly-accessible website and anyone will be able to
read them. This is so that they will build into a resource to help
others who encounter similar problems in the future. Therefore, when
suggesting solutions, please make sure that they are polite and as
complete as possible (especially in terms of any instructions
provided).
We will also post requests for information, such as requests for
recommendations for GIS software packages, or indeed experiences with
them, and requests for suggested data sources for specific projects/
parts of the world. When posting such requests, please provide as much
information as possible as to what information you are looking and why
you are looking for it.
We may also occasionally post messages about new research papers that
use GIS in interesting and novel ways to answer ecological research
questions but only if we feel that they will be of interest to the
group as a whole.
Similarly, we may also post announcements for meetings, conferences
and courses, but only if we feel that they will have a wide appeal to
the groups members.
On occasions, we may post reviews or comparisons of specific GIS
software packages that do not relate directly to a question or request
someone has posted. However, such posts are by invitation only. If
you would be interested in writing such a post, please contact
moderators to discuss this possibility.
As a general rule, we will not post adverts for commercial
organisations as this is primarily meant to be a forum for discussing
issues directly related to the use GIS in ecological research.
However, we will post information from GIS In Ecology
(
www.GISinEcology.com), such as dates and locations of courses or new
books our staff might publish. If you wish to receive such
information without subscribing to this forum, you can join our News
and
Announcements email lists by emailing in...@GISinEcology.com.
We operate an anti-spam policy that means that anyone posting a
messages classified as spam to this group will be banned from the
group.
All the best,
Colin
Dr. Colin D. MacLeod,
Founder, GIS In Ecology.
