Hey all,  I'm thinking of making an SL fork but before I take the plunge, I like to see some
photos of how you've done it-  wiring from the fork crown to rack/light.  It will be a custom mini rack with a light mount in front instead of on the side.  I'm thinking I should get the upside-down light since it would hang below the rack platform.  Any tips and pointers would be much appreciated.

The upside down versions do not have the sensor and are manual only

Schmidt dropouts can be very clunky , i allways find myself removing
material before I find them acceptable

If you do not have a disc you can run the dynamo in reverse and have all
wiring and light on the left side. (Needs differnt dropouts)

give a thought on how it goes apart, eg for headset service.

To get the headlight running, you only need to connect the inner wire of
the coax, the lamp bolt is grounded

Cover the axle ends of the dynamo with insulating tape for wheelbuilding

A SL fork is pretty much the same as a regular fork with internally routed wiring, with the notable exception of the insulated contact plate.  I've made 2 SL forks and modified one existing fork with SL contacts; in all of these cases, I used normal dropouts, thinned appropriately, then either drilled to accept a SL insulating plate or painted with epoxy to insulated (and then cemented a plate on after the insulation cures.)

Thank you Marten & David,
Great tips, I'll just use the Suntour tips I have, and just get the contact kit then.

The recess measures 24mm, so the dropouts have to be big enough

Marten,  Peter Whites sells the recess plate for older fork tips like Campy etc. that you just solder on.
I'm getting a set to try.

Tom-
Those washers suck. You can see this album from 10 years ago when I was first trying that stuff out. The insulator is huge relative to a traditional steel dropout. I ended up making my own slimmed down version for the schmidt parts and then eventually making a new version of the dropout insulator and conductor.

tradeshows ;)

When I made my front rack with a central front light mount I didn’t want to lose the tail light power plug, so I went with the regular Edelux light. The rack needed to be a bit higher to accommodate the mounting bracket and wire underneath. My attachment allows side to side and up and down adjustment, inside a cage that protects it with arches. I could have made a flat rack without arches (although the rack would sit even higher off the tire), but I like how it looks.

To avoid confusion, the upside down uses a screwed down eyelet to
connect the rearlight instead of a 2.8mm plug. It lacks however the
sensor, as that won't work upside down

Thanks Marten, I did not know about the tail light connection for the new version. The first upside down version did not have it. Using the new version on my rack would have been a lot less trouble!

when they first came out (2016 here) there were two versions, one
without cable, switch or rearlight, and the other with integrated cable,
switch and which used the connection for the rear light. Both are still
available, and there is a black version with rear light now as well

Thanks Drew,
What cool idea: the cage  @ the ht. adjustment. No hanging light needed then.
