I think folks use acetylene tips somewhere beteen 000 00 0 1 and 2

I'm looking to set up an
Oxy Propane setup but they only have size 0 and size 2 for the "ten" type tips. 0311-0483 and 0311-0485

Anyone have experience with what right tips are for oxy/propane j28 for fully brazing and lugged???

I have tips 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

I mostly use 0, 2, and 4, with 4 being for lugs. If I were working with heavier material (for a lugged cargo bike or something) I'd use the 5.

I suggest getting the UN-J mixer and then buying the cheaper screw on tips. It makes tip changes faster, you don't have to worry about O-rings, and the whole thing is cheaper. I guess the only downside is that the tips weigh slightly more.

I bought this:
"UN-J Nozzle" http://weldingsupply.securesites.net/cgi-bin/spider.pl?0325-0101||1|751||
"0-TE Welding tip" http://weldingsupply.securesites.net/cgi-bin/spider.pl?0311-0473||1|751||
"2-TEN Welding tip" http://weldingsupply.securesites.net/cgi-bin/spider.pl?0311-0485||1|751||
"4-TEN Welding tip" http://weldingsupply.securesites.net/cgi-bin/spider.pl?0311-0487||1|751||

The -TEN tips are designed for propane and propane like gasses and have a small recess in the end of the tip. The -TE ones are designed for acetylene. They don't make the smaller sizes in propane specific, but the acetylene ones seem to work fine.

These guys have a nice photo of what the replaceable tips look like:

My #1 and #3 are the regular style tips with the integrated mixer, I use the thread-on tips for 0, 2, 4, and 5.

Someday I really need to make a blog entry for this with photos...

You can convert ace tips to propane by simply drilling the required
recess in the tip. Use a drill that's ~2x the size of the ace hole
and drill it ~2x deep in the tip. Deburr.

Simple and effective

I know, but I haven't found it to matter very much. It makes it slightly easier to light the tip because the propane heavy flame doesn't detach so easily. However once you've got the gas mix properly adjusted it doesn't seem to make any difference.

If it makes any difference these removable tips are easier to make that modification on since they can be mounted in a lathe.

Yes, that's what I have and that's what I do. I suppose you could do
the larger tips in a vise with a hand drill, but I've never tried
that.
