Oh great hive mind...
I have a project that needs a flat plate (~ 2.5mm thick) of steel cut
with 2 exact holes  ...
Any suggestion who is good these  days ??

Thanks for any guidance   =)

I take it you aren't in the U.S.? There are a number of online laser
cutting places that I have used successfully. I don't think there is
any advantage to waterjet cutting over laser

Thanks for the thoughts, Eric   =)
water vs laser cut   ...     I had a plate cut years ago and specified
an axle slot at 8.05mm (for 8mm axle), it came back at 7.9   ={     I
forget if this was a water or laser cut job
I was told by someone that is not uncommon, but I forget if this was
a water or laser cut, is one more prone to this kind of error ??    Or
maybe it is whether it is an "inside" dimension or "outside"  ??

actually in the u.s. of A.
But there are a bunch of on-line options and how to choose ?
Maybe one is cheaper or more regular edge ?
So I thought some feedback might help...
No biggie, I'll just flip a coin.
It is a simple job   (famous last words)

I have been happy with send cut send https://sendcutsend.com/
you need a dxf or similar of the part.
Both waterjetting and laser cutting have gotten better about spread,
which is why the parts are a little oversize on thicker items. I
don't think 2.5mm qualifies as being "thicker" Send cut send has some
information about how close their tolerances are.

My experience with laser & abrasive water jet is that it's tough for the process to hold the kind of tolerances we're talking about.  I had one recently who thought maybe they could hold +/-0.13mm through a 3mm thick piece of steel, but eventually gave up.  On the other hand, most shops will tell you straight up what they can hold, both the basic tolerance and the angle of the kerf.  So just ask them whether they can hold the tolerances on your drawing.  They're accustomed to this question.

Let us know if you find someone who can consistently do better than about +/-0.2mm!

36mm, straight, "exact" ...
on a ~ 2.5mm sheet...
I'm not that good   =}
(I do not have a shop set up, no good drill press, no expectation of a truly round holesaw that size for less than just ordering the job done from a laser-cutter/waterjet shop)

but thanks for the thought, I appreciate it  !!

noMadic Thomas,

If all you need is a precise 36mm hole cut in a flat plate or two, I can certainly cut those holes for you on a CNC milling machine.

Sounds like a good CNC milling job.

Use the proper tool for the job. Laser or water jet will position the hole
properly but will not be able to size it to the accuracy you need.

For the accuracy that you want, cut the hole undersize and finish it with
a reamer.

first question should be do you really need that much accuracy?

Probably not but in this case you get it for almost free.

A HSS 8mm chucking or hand reamer can be had for about $10 from Amazon.
Reamers almost always cut oversize so you get your 8.05mm for free.

The pre-reamed hole is ideally about 2% under the final size, so 8mm x .98
= 7.84 mm. A little under or over is not a big deal. Under is better. Tell
the machine operator what you want to hole for. Taper is not a problem.
