Hi Builders,
Has anyone tried using stay-silv 15 for bicycles? I used to make heat exchangers, for the fine joints we used 56% silver, for the large joints we used stay-silv15 which I believe is mostly copper with 15% silver. An interesting thing about 15 is that I have actually used it with a tig welder to make joints between copper, bronze, brass and stainless. When working with brass we even used some black brazing flux with the tig torch, you can get the 15 to make a nice fillet or flow like  silver does with gas torches. I also have a large supply of stay-silv 0 which has no silver and is almoast all copper. These alloys are used in the medical brazing field.  Any thoughts on using these fillers for drop outs or fillet brazing? With the price of silver it would be nice to use the large supply I have. Thanks for any input.

Gian,

I've used the stuff to repair frames.  It is nice for repairing stainless steel cookware, and will mix with lead solder quite well for durable repairs to cracked radiators.  It isn't really great for frames, partly because it is so hard to file.  I haven't used the stuff for anything for about 15 years.

If you are looking for a nice alternative filler material, try Welco 17.  It is a nickel bronze, but a relatively soft one that files almost as easily as brazz.
