I've got a frame coming up with S&S couplers and a Rohloff hub.  I know full cable housing is recommended but I will be using cable spliters so some exposed cable along the DT will be needed.

I've noticed that the two cable are always run in tandem along the DT.  Is there any reason I can't just use the built in left and right STI stops on the lug?  The cables will then be in tandem after the cable stop and run along the CS.  This should be pretty smooth with no harsh bends.

This makes sense in my head but I want to make sure I'm not missing some Rohloff quirk.

Thanks, Joel

The EX box detaches from the hub, so it shouldn't be to difficult to do
away with cable splitters in the shiftcable runs. Saves hassle, money
and a lot of headaches when putting the bike together and trying to
figure which cable goes where.

One reason not to do this might be looks, as you can't really tie the
cables together now and they will flop their own merry way.
The other is that mounting the cables that far forward might interfere
with a bar bag.
If the STI slot isn't slotted the bar and cables will have to stay with
the frame, which isn't packing friendly

Other than that it will work fine

No reason not to use exposed cable, the ex box will be full of crud
before contaminated cables will be an issue ;)

Good info., Marten, I hadn't considered that.  Now I just need an easy way to detach the cable housing from the braze-ons post coupler.  Maybe these:

or

or a velcro strap, two cablestops back to back, hydraulic guides,
something springy you can snap the cables in....

One way to clip those cables is to use slotted cable stops but drill them out straight thru and widen the slot so you can just barely squeeze the cable in,  I've done that with hydraulic hose and it works as well as anything else.  You could twin them up or stagger them, or maybe use double stops.

Electrician's tape works pretty well too.

Good luck.

I always like to see BikeCAD drawings used in framebuilding discussions. To add even more clarity to this particular discussion, I should point out that the latest version of BikeCAD (12.5) allows for the display of cable guides as discussed at: http://www.bikecad.ca/cable_guides

another trick which works without seperate parts to loose is to make a
slotted cablestop with a larger ID, fit the cable and lock it in place
with a slieve which matches the ID of the stop and the OD of the
shiftcable

Hey Joel,

I did a bike like that recently.

I ended up making some housing guides on the mill out of double stops and they work well.

Good luck,

Hi Joel,

I'd second those bolt on cable guides from Ceeway, the 170A, B and C clips. They just bolt onto an M5 rivnut or bottle cage boss.
Nicolai use something very similar on their products.

Alternatively, there's the cable guides (brazed or rivet-on) with the removable plastic clip or zip tie fitting.

All the best, Dan Chambers

I have a Seven MTB with couplers and a Rohloff that just uses the Paragon zip-tie hydraulic cable housing guides for the shift cables as well.  Packing it involves cutting a few zipties and replacing them when you reassemble the bike.  It's not a big deal.  I have to admit to not traveling much with that bike -- I love the Rohloff but prefer to fly with a bike that has cheap and easy to find/replace parts, so my primary S&S bike uses downtube shifters, Shimano derailleurs, and V-brakes.  The rear wheel has a Hugi/DT-Swiss hub that makes removing the cassette body trivial, that makes the packing a lot easier since the wheel is narrower and there aren't any sharp objects to mar up the paint.
