What is the cost to refill your argon tank?  Size tank?  Where are you located?

I would extremely appreciate your answer.

I don't use that much so it always gives me a shock when I get a new one. Not sure what they call it, big size though, last time over $100. It turns out that argon is a byproduct of making oxygen, and because the economy is bad the demand for oxygen is low. In this case there is not enough of a market for argon to just distill the air for it.

I have two tanks, a 250 and a 300.  The 250 is about $45 and the 300 is $53.  Before I got those prices, I think I was paying $80ish per bottle.

Here in Israel it is around 100-130 $ for a bottle depending on how clean it is. Not sure about the size - around 1.5m tall

Sean that is really cheap.  I am paying $93 for a 330 bottle but that is including delivery.  The delivery people are amazing.  They roll the tanks to the shop and even change them if I tell them the one on the regulator is empty.  They also do not charge to get tanks.  I own two tanks but have 3 of there tanks in rotation as well.  I have one small one for portable purposes and then 4 large bottles.  I have been thinking of switching to liquid in the smallest tank available.

Cheers,
Drew

I was reminded when I read this thread that I have 2 – 280 Argon cylinders that I own and would be willing to sell for $250 each.

These are extras.  Anyone interested would have to come by the shop and pick them up.  Please give me a call (707) 762-5601

It's super cheap.  Until recently it was a pretty small local company and they've always been good to me so I buy everything through them.  Now they're owned by Matheson, but the same guys run the shop and luckily my terms haven't changed.  I don't expect it to last forever but I'm not going to do anything to upset the cart.  I do pick up the tanks myself, but will switch over to delivery soon as I'm moving into a proper shop.

That's in Amsterdam, right? I think I have a friend who would be very
interested in that. Where do you buy that?

For entertainment value: Strictly speaking you should use 5.0 Argon for
titanium (for aviation welding). The first offer I had for that (50 liters,
300 Bar, that's 530cf) was an amazing 840 Euro! I now pay 90 for the same
quantity of the same stuff. Price calculations for gas are something I have
yet to understand.

James,

just filled an 80 cu. ft tank last week here in Seattle. $41.58 for
the Argon, $8.32 hazardous material charge, $4.74 tax.

So, almost $55 when all is said and done.

Alistair.

In Niles Michigan (near South Bend, Indiana) my local supplier charges $50.50 for 140 cubic foot tank and $55 for a 170 cf one.  A size T tank (which can only be rented) costs $75.  If its of any interest an 80 cubic foot tank refill is $34.50.

Thanks everyone for the information.  Here in Honolulu, Hawaii,  the cost to refill a 120 cubic foot bottle  is now $244.  I thought the prices were high everywhere.  I was wrong.

I’m in Germany, but as I have said the prices difference in price for the same product was roughly 1000%. I think you should just try different source. Maybe it’s different in Hawaii, but it’s worth a try.

@Marten:
Thank you very much, I’ll pass that on.

This is an old story but may help illuminate the reasons for price of gas in your very small market. I don't know if Hawaii has an air separation plant, but even if it does then the high cost of energy is the reason for you argon price.

John, I've wondered about that myself. Never asked about it though, I
figured it was all part of some handling fee and maybe something to do
with handling high pressure gases.

Maybe they just charge the hazmat fee because they can, then funnel it
into a pizza/beer fund..

John, it is considered a hazardous material because it can displace
oxygen in a room. Don't know if it has ever happened, but possible in
theory. Other than than that it is inert.

"Argonite is an inert gas that extinguishes fire based on the principle
of oxygen depletion. In a closed space almost all fires are extinguished
in less than 60 seconds when the oxygen concentration falls below 15%.
Argonite reduces the oxygen concentration to approximately 12.5%, an
acceptable level for human exposure over short periods of time. In
occupied spaces, people can breathe Argonite at extinguishing
concentrations without fear. There are no toxicological factors
associated with the use of Argonite. Argonite will not decompose or
produce any byproducts when exposed to a flame from a fire condition.

Argonite is an inert gas blend consisting of a 50:50 mixture of two
gases found naturally in the atmosphere: Argon (AR) and Nitrogen (N2).
It is environmentally neutral, having zero ozone depletion potential
(ODP) and zero global warming potential (GWP). "

Thomas, we use argon for welding, not argonite. Here is a quote from the wiki entry for argon:

Although argon is non-toxic, it is 38% denser than air and is therefore considered a dangerous asphyxiant in closed areas. It is also difficult to detect because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. A 1994 incident in which a man was asphyxiated after entering an argon filled section of oil pipe under construction in Alaska highlights the dangers of argon tank leakage in confined spaces, and emphasizes the need for proper use, storage and handling.[31]

I do know of this happening. During the construction of Nuke plants a lot of stainless gets welded. If a whole room of guys are tig welding the heavy argon gas can settle and slowly fill the room and displace the air. I have heard stories of this and one welder will pass out. The other guys grab his ankles and the heavy argon hopefully drains out of his lungs! Not poison, but just like water when it is inside one's lungs.

That struck me as odd, too. Perhaps they are referring to the fact
that it is in a high pressure cylinder, rather than any intrinsic
property of the gas.

Still, I'd consider a tank of hydrogen, propane, or acetylene to be
much more hazardous than argon.

If that's the "problem," then ALL pure gasses are hazardous
materials. Pure oxygen is a huge fire hazard, and everything else is
either a fire hazard or a oxygen displacement hazard. Helium might be
an exception, but I can still imagine a situation where helium might
fill the top of a confined space and displace all the oxygen there.

This becomes a sort of Catch 22.

I didn't know, either. I just remembered from Chemistry that argon is an
inert gas and normally present (albeit in small percentage) in regular air.
