Facebook and Twitter can be used very effectively if you understand the following:

1) The way it's designed to work
2) How your particular target audience actually uses it

And then you systematize your social media interaction and delegate as much as you can.  If you think its a waste of time - just ask yourself - can you run a kickstarter using just twitter, facebook and your blog and gross 1.3 M without a record contract.   No?  Amanda Palmer did.  Can you garner $100,000 to record your next album just using facebook and your email list?  No? Ellis Paul did....

It can be done.  But you have to be willing to learn and do what works, rather than blaming and flaming the tools, because you haven't figured out how to use them.  Blaming Facebook and Twitter for being exactly what they are is like blaming the hammer because you hit your thumb.

Just my opinion, of course...

Warm regards,
Debra

However, as Mary Granata has so eloquently pointed out, EVENTS are the best
way of getting hundreds of invitations to people to let them know about
your gigs.... or Listening Parties for a new CD release... or a worthwhile
    project or charity event...

I have had tremendous success over the last couple of years creating events
and inviting people while simultaneously posting it on my time line and
    watch it replicate endlessly...!

But Mike is also right... both Twitter and Facebook pander to those so
starved for social interaction they are willing to post up "I just had the most
delicious bologna sandwich" as if endless throngs of us awaited that
    news...

IMHO, that is PRECISELY what Facebook was designed for. Or if not
conciously designed that way, that's precisely the way it works. Facebook
is designed to serve the garrulous, sociable kind of person who talks to
strangers in bars and commuter trains, and enjoys that sort of random
    social
interaction. It was never designed as a vehicle for targeted messages.
    And
trying to use it as such is, as Robin pointed out, is a waste of valuable
    time.

Debra,
Take a look at the video links I posted. The Facebook that Amanda Palmer used and that Ellis Paul used even a couple of years ago is very different than the FB of today.

If an artist understands how it works, yes, they should continue to use it but unless you can create very, very engaging content your chances of getting your info to the people who like your page is very low - down around 30% for most of my postings to the Mainstay page a couple of months ago - less now as I've paid it less and less attention. The percentae is more for personal pages but even there, if your friends don't routinely interact with you, FB shows you and them less and less of what you post.

Best,
Mary Lou

Not to mention that Amanda Palmer an Ellis Paul have huge followings.  What works for them will not generally work as well as for most folks here in any case.

Good points about using it as designed - love the hammer metaphor.

Facebook just isn't designed to do what Robin is wanting it to do ... and it never was.  And that's by design.  They will be quite happy to take your money if you'd like to pay them to get your message more reliably to a larger, more targeted audience.  That's what's required to do what you're asking.

In the meantime, in general there's still no real substitute for building a responsive email list.

Peace and Prosperity,
Wendy
