Google's Deep Mind has a new AI called "AlphaEvolve", and it has made a bunch of new math discoveries, among many other things he she or it found a way to multiply matrices together more efficiently. And nothing can benefit more from learning how to multiply large matrices together in a way that needs fewer computer operations than AI. It's a classic case of positive feedback.

AlphaEvolve seems an important step toward AI that iteratively
improves itself. Perhaps the writing is on the wall? But I prefer
optimism. Let's give birth to our mind children, and all will be well.

Maybe, it's not impossible, and that is why all hope is not lost. Our mind children might have some affection for us because, however great they may be, they never would have existed without us. If today we discovered that a small tribe of Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy's people) still existed I don't think many would want to drive them into extinction, although even fewer would want them to have a major voice in world affairs.

Agree. Stopping technical progress seems very unlikely.

The trouble is that the side effects of human desires and the power of
AI and nanotech are (in my opinion) likely to lead to biological
extinction. This is not an entirely bad outcome.

We could already be seeing that at Tabby's star.
