Hi everybody,
last but not least :
when i tried to install the program i've made on another computer (in excel/ options/ Addins/ browse...) select the .xll file (i have two versions, neither of them is working).
I have the following message : "abcd-packed.xll is not a valid addin"  !!

I can't copy all my code but i do not understand, as the program works perfectly well on my computer.

Did anybody have the same issue ?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

The Excel version you're now trying it on might be a 64-bit installation.
Then you need to use the 64-bit version of the .xll.

If you've used NuGet to make your add-in, it will build a 64-bit version too, else you need to make one using ExcelDna64.xll from the Excel-DNA Distribution directory instead of ExcelDna.xll.

Hi Paul,

Does the add-in in the Excel-DNA distribution work on that machine?

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit Excel?

What is the exact message?

Hi Govert,
i noticed a strange thing : my 64bit version is udpdated but not the 32bit version of the .xll. And as my excel is in 32bit i think this is the point. Why do i have only the 64bit version of the .xll ?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Is the Excel that you have problems with a 32-bit or 64-bit installation of Excel?

Does the appropriate add-in in the Excel-DNA distribution work on that machine (you can download the full distribution from https://exceldna.codeplex.com/downloads/get/817263)?

Just double-click the Distribution\ExcelDna.xll for 32-bit, and Distribution\ExcelDna64.xll for 64-bit, check for error messages and that the =AddThem(…) worksheet function is registered.

What is the exact message?

The most likely reason why you’ll get the “XXX.xll is not a valid add-in” message is if the 32-bit / 64-bit version is wrong.

Hi Govert,
when i click on the ExcelDna.xll i have the following message :

The file you are trying to open, 'ExcelDna.xllt', is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?

To sum up, the problem is : i can't install my .xll on other computers. I can't even launch ExcelDna.xll
.
If i click on ExcelDna.xll i have  the following message : The file you are trying to open, 'ExcelDna.xll', is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?

If i try to install ExcelDna.xll or My addin from excel i have the following message : "....xll is not a valid addin"

My excel is in 32 bits and i use the 32 bits version of my .xll

Hi Paul,

Please confirm the following:
1. You've downloaded the Excel-DNA distribution file from CodePlex and unzipped it.
2. The Excel you're testing with is a 32-bit installation.
3. You double-click the Distribution\ExcelDna.xll file, or go File-> Open and select it.
4. Then you get the message about "different format".

Now:
1. If the Excel were a 64-bit installation, this is exactly what one would expect, and you would need to load Distribution\ExcelDna64.xll instead.

2. Can you confirm that VBA is installed on that Excel (just press Alt+F11 and confirm that the VBA IDE loads)? VBA is an optional feature, and is required for Excel to support any type of add-in.

3. Otherwise, the only reason I have heard of why the simple add-in in the Distribution might fail to run completely, and Excel give that message, is due to some problem with an anti-virus or other security software, or due to a corrupt installation. But it's certainly extremely unusual.

I did exactly your 4 steps. And i am sure it is a 32 bits version.

OK - have you checked the VBA?

Otherwise there might be some security software installed on the PC that prevents .dlls from some locations from loading.

I have checked the VBA, this is not the problem.
I will look at security softwares.
Thx,
Paul

Hi Govert,

the problem was the same as in the link you gave me. My company did not allow the xll addin. to be installed. I put in in a "trusted documents" folder and it worked perfectly.
Only one button is not working (and it works on my computer) i will spend time on it to understand why.
Maybe you have a solution (add a signature in the program...) so that the program is not seen as "untrusted" addin?

Thank you for everything.

Paul

Hi Paul,

You can sign the add-in (the packed .xll file) with the ‘signtool’ utility.

See the documentation here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa387764(v=vs.85).aspx

And detailed instructions for signing your .xll here: http://www.technicana.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=61
