Can't load either 32 or 64 bit XLL

Hi,

 

I tried to load an addin on a computer today - 64-bit Windows 7, Excel 2007 - and neither the 32-bit or 64-bit version will load. I even tried some of the basic samples that are included in the Excel-DNA distribution but even they won't load. Regardless of which version I use I always get the "different format than specified" error that comes up when you use the wrong XLL version. The same thing happens whether I use the packed or unpacked XLLs.

 

This is the first time I've ever seen this - Excel DNA works on all other 64, 32 and mixed versions I've ever had to use.

 

Do you have any ideas what it might be?

Hi Andrew,

You can check that the VBA IDE is installed on that Excel - just press Alt+F11. If not, no add-ins will run.

Hi Govert,

 

The VBA editor is installed. My workbook checks to see whether it is the 32 or 64 bit version that is required and loads the correct one on a button-push. I couldn't work out why it wasn't working so I was in the VBA editor to check. It turned out that Excel was unable to successfully load either XLL file, which I then confirmed by trying to load them directly (double clicking the file). For both versions I got the error mentioned.

How about corrupted xll files? I got similar problems in the past when I ftp-ed files with ascii instead of binary mode.

 

Try to redownload the xll from Govert’s distribution.

Hi everyone,

 

Thanks for your suggestions. It was on a client machine and they were able to get their IT department to relocate the XLL to a password-secured "Trusted Location" from whence it worked! Strange that it should result in the unhelpful "different format than specified" error but there we go...
