Why China can't make chips

Now that China has started to attack the free market in general and high-tech companies in particular and it's become clear that Xi Jinping intends to remain dictator till he dies of old age, this problem will only intensify. China was on the path towards dominating the world economically but it decided, or rather Xi Jinping decided, to make a U-turn on that path. Apparently Xi would rather have total control over a weak backward China than only partial control over a strong technologically advanced China.

Sure John. There was a break in the Party, when last year, a team within The CCP died a white swan black and released it in Tiananmen Square last year. Reference being economist, Nassim Nicolas Taleb's Black Swan book.
