The European Union demanded Anthropic watermark all of Claude's output text so anybody could tell it was generated by an AI, so now everybody gets it, not just those in Europe. It works by subtly changing the probability of certain word combinations, so it can be defeated by rewriting Claude's output in your own words. According to Scott Aaronson, the man who invented most of the watermarking process:
"it's possible to remove the watermarks with a little extra work (even stuff as simple as, e.g., translating between English and French, asking the LLM for words interspersed with emojis and then removing the emojis, or using an open model to paraphrase the output)."
