                  (Best authentic English passages collection)

[Guide for the Activity]
This is an activity in which teachers from different areas collect or create English reading passages together, for primary and secondary English learners. Definitely, these passages should demonstrate authentic western culture.   Passages about English language and literature, western customs, stories,  history culture. etc. are all okay.

If you can provide the information, like the difficulty level, types, to whom it is proper, it will be better. And of course, the issue of copyright is important, so please add the source of the articles.

Then, we can make a e-profile (in the form of word, pdf or web)to share with one another.

Welcome you to join it! And volunteers for the organization and developing the e-profile are needed!

先推荐罗素的这一篇文章:《THE PROBLEM OF CHINA》

Hello,

This is a reading passage about a college kid and his cell phone:

My name is Jerry and I am a college student at Syracuse University.  I am in my sophomore year and I am studying Business Administration.  I like college so far and I’ve had mostly good experiences.  One issue I did have last year was my roommate situation.  I didn’t get along with him at all.  It made for an interesting year.

David Cohen was who I was assigned to live with my freshman year.  Most colleges select your first year roommate for you.  I guess it is part of the experience.  Luckily, during the years that follow, students can pick their own person to live with.  I could write an entire book about the things that bothered me about David, but spending that much time thinking about it is probably not a good idea.  One major thing about David that I won’t forget is that he was always on his cell phone.  In the freshman year dorms students are provided with a land line.  Students of course bring their own cell phones, but the land lines were provided.    David was a fast talking, pushy and self centered.  He was always blabbing on his phone loudly at all hours of the night.  Sometimes he would have his cell phone in one ear and the land line in the other.  He eventually got a hands free device for his cell phone to make it easier.  He would pace around the room shouting into both phones.  It drove me crazy.

By November of that year David’s parents realized that he was talking too much.  His dad got the cell phone bill and it was astronomical.  During the month of October David had run up a $400 bill.  The total airtime used was 1400 minutes.  This was way over his allotted minutes.  His dad was furious.  He limited David’s phone right away.  They had a Family plan and it allowed the family members to talk to each other for free.  David was now only able to call his mother or father.  He was crushed for a little while, but he was back in action within a week.  David sold all of his books and dropped a few classes.  This gave him some cash to work with.  He went out and bought his own cell phone.  So his dad wouldn’t find out, he got a prepaid plan with another service provider.  His late night talking started up again.  I couldn’t get any sleep.  Of course I asked him to quiet down and not talk on the phone after 10 but he didn’t listen.

Eventually David ran out of minutes on his pre paid phone.  He didn’t have any money left so he couldn’t get another.  At this point I had thrown away the phone for the land line.  I had my own cell phone and he couldn’t use it.  The semester was coming to an end.  David hadn’t done much school work at all so he failed out. The college wouldn’t let him come back.   During the spring semester I was assigned a new roommate.  It worked out.  This new guy was quiet and spent most of his time studying.  I was in heaven!  I guess that first semester was a learning experience for me.  I’m just glad it is over!

Thanks! Use it with your students. It is free. I have my ESL students go through the lessons at the end of class, if there is some extra time. As you see, it doesn't focus on English grammar. The site was created to improve overall English fluency. A couple of years ago I couldn't find web sites out there that focused on every day type English. This is what my advanced students needed. So I made this site. Anyway, I would be happy to contribute anything I can to this group. I love the fact that there are people as far away as China that are doing what I am doing here in the US. Thanks internet!

Hello,

I can't figure out how to submit a document on your site. My Chinese is not good!:) here is another passage for you to use if you like:

My name is Dave Navin. This spring break I am thinking about heading to Denver, CO for vacation. I’m from New York so I haven’t been out west very often. Denver will be a nice change of pace. I can also check out the great ski mountains just two hours west of the city. There are endless attractions in the greater Denver area.

Since NY is so far away from Colorado I will probably have a layover in one of the Midwestern cities like Cleveland or Cincinnati. The spring time is pretty much in the tail end of the peak season in Colorado so I’ll have to pay a lot for travel and lodging. My girlfriend’s brother is a travel agent so I will have to ask him to help me out in getting some good rates. Having talked to him in the past about traveling I know he is going to tell me to go in the off season to get a better rate. He tells all of his clients this. I understand his point, but I’ve never liked planning my vacations around the peak seasons.

I’m not a huge skier so I will probably stay away from the ski resorts. I’ll spend more time off the beaten path avoiding the expensive tourist traps. Ski resorts are notorious for being overpriced because they can be. The other day I saw a special on the Discovery Channel about some old mining towns in the Denver area. That’s what I plan on visiting. I love history. While I’m in the city I’ll maybe see a show in the theater district and if I’m feeling crazy I’ll check out the red light district if Denver has one. It should be a great time!

American English and British English

Do you want to know about the differences between American English and British English? At first, the language in Britain and America was the same. In 1776 America became an independent(独立的) country. After that, the language slowly began to change(变化). For example, 300 years ago the English talked about “fall”. Today, most British people talk about “autumn”, but Americans still(仍然) talk about “fall”. At the same time, American English and British English started borrowing() words from other languages. For example, the British took “typhoon” from Chinese; the Americans took “tornado” from Spanish.

In 1828 Noah Webster published the first American dictionary. He wanted to make American English different from British English, so he changed the spelling of many words. That’s why the words “colour, centre and traveller” are spelt(被拼写) “color, center and traveler” in American English.

The differences are greater in the spoken language. For example, Americans say dance /dæns/, and in England they say / dɑ:ns/. In America, they say not/ nɑːt/. In England they say/ nɔt/. However(然而), most people from the two countries do not have any difficulty(困难) in understanding each other.

==> Thanks Andrew! They are really good passages.

I have rearranged them in this website:

Here is one about driving:

There is nothing worse than driving in a traffic jam.  Nobody likes to sit in their car on the highway after a long day of work.  I can see why some people are driven to road rage.  Traffic jams can be caused by a car breaking down, a fender bender, a major accident or construction.  On a typical highway in any US city there are thousands of cars driving along.  The chances of someone breaking down or getting in a small accident are very high.  This is why you will see traffic jams in most cities everyday.  Even if one driver out of the thousands gets a flat this can cause traffic build up.  The driver has to pull over, fix the tire and then get back on the road.  Meanwhile all the other drivers are slowing down to see what the problem is.  In the case of an accident it is even worse.  I think we should all use the train or the bus.  Wouldn’t that solve this problem?
