The world’s population is expected to increase by 2 billion persons in the next 30 years, from 7.7 billion currently to 9.7 billion in 2050, according to a new United Nations reportWorld Population Prospects 2019: Highlights published on monday by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The new population projections indicate that nine countries will make up more than half the projected growth of the global population between now and 2050: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt and the United States of America (in descending order of the expected increase). Around 2027, India is projected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country.

The number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 70 million in 2018. This is the highest level that UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, has seen in its almost 70 years.

Data from UNHCR’s annual Global Trends report, shows that almost 70.8 million people are now forcibly displaced. To put this in perspective, this is double the level of 20 years ago, 2.3 million more than a year ago, and corresponds to a population between that of Thailand and Turkey.

The figure of 70.8 million is conservative, in particular as the crisis in Venezuela is still only partly reflected in this number.

According to the ruling by UK Court of Appeal, british arms sales to Saudi Arabia are unlawful becouse they did not proprerly consider whether the weapons would be used to commit “serious violation of international humanitarian law” in Yemen.

The decision in London on Thursday follows a challenge by the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT).

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the government would not grant any new licences for export to Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners while it considers the implications of the judgment.

The World Food Programme (WFP), confirmed on Friday in a statement that it has started a “partial suspension” of aid to areas of Yemen controlled by Houthi opposition forces, including the capital, Sana’a. In total, WFP estimates that around three-quarters of the people in Yemen who do not have reliable access to food, some nine million, are in areas controlled by Houthis.

Back in May, WFP’s Spokesperson, denounced “the obstructive and uncooperative role of some of the Houthi leaders in areas under their control.”
