Here is my final version of my project.  I have also included a movie version of my intro powerpoint (the movie allows for better processing of the audio and videos in the powerpoint).  I have also included a link to the screencast video that will be used as the "how to" part of the project.  I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Hi Brett,  I looked over your project on NGOs with great interest.  This is a topic I also cover in my World Issues class.  The project is very similar to a group project I asign although I hadn't gone with an online component such as wikis before.  I think that the next time I give this project I will steal your wiki idea.  The kids will enjoy the opportunity to select an NGO and create a wiki to promote it and raise awareness.

I found your wiki page to be detailed and well organized.  The details of the project were clear and concise and the instructions were also clear.  I like how you broke the wiki up into a teacher page, assignment page and learning styles page.  I did something similar with my wiki.

You might consider attaching the rubric as a document so they can download it, print it and use it as a guide/checklist.  I suppose they could probbaly copy and paste it, but to each their own.

This is top quality work.  Well done!

Christopher,

I very much enjoyed your lesson for your Native Studies class.  I found the URLs to be very detailed, and reputable.  Stats Canada is an independent organization which provides Canadians with a plethora of reliable data which you are incorporating in your project.  In addition, it is good for students to work with up to date information.  It gives them a sense of application to real life.
Your Wiki instructions are very clear and easy to follow.  The outline provides students with a starting point and framework with which to work.  The rubric for the final project is very detailed.
My only suggestion is to offer additional options in terms of student creativity within the final project; perhaps a video the students could create by visiting local members of a First Nations reserve and interviewing them.  This would add a higher degree of achievement for those students who are so inclined.
All in all, an excellent project.  Well done!

My project includes the following documents.  (1) My lesson plan on Social Psychology for my AP Psych students (for next school year)  This document includes the links to my Voice Thread for my students. (2) The document I'll be using to facilitate the in-class hook and (3) the project guidelines for my students which will be posted on my class link through my school's website (I am unable to do so yet, since I'm not teaching this year).

Hello!

Your video is informative for your students! Also, I am assuming that this is for some sort of technology class, since the lesson is about being taught to use PowerPoint, is that correct (grade level?)?  A suggestion - if the lesson is about presentation skills, maybe you could open up for them another presentation option like Prezi, which is really intuitive and wouldn't require  much class time to "teach".

Chris,
What an interesting lesson! I like how you have your students gain expertise into a first tribe of their choosing. Also, I like your rubric - very clear.

Some suggestions - is there any "sample" wiki page - maybe one that is not about this particular content - that you could show or link to? This way, your students could get a sense of what a good wiki looks like (if they've already had experience with this, then maybe this is a moot point).  Ans - to echo Brett's comment - perhaps you could give your students a "menu" of multimedia options to demonstrate the objectives.  I know that sometimes this can be tricky to grade equitably, but when I did this in the past, I created a common rubric that I used for the different options the students selected.

Nice work!

Brett,
I really like this lesson! I especially like how you give your students a "purpose" in creating their piece  -that they are trying to incentive the behavior of others to give (financially or in some other way) to the NGO.  I also like how you have your students identify their learning styles before completing this activity.
A suggestion - is there any way you could show them an exemplar via the web so that they get a sense of what a really good project looks like? Or, a sample you create? That way, the students have a sense of what a top grade "looks" like for this project.  I find that is really powerful for students.  Sometimes (depending on the project), I also show them a "failing grade" project (it is made anonymous, of course!).  Doing that is equally as powerful (and it lets them know that - yes - they can earn a failing grade is they try to phone it in!!)!

Thank you very for you comments.  This is for my tech arts class and it does act as an introduction to PowerPoint and also an introduction to the students, which have entered my class.  I have done this lesson with all 3 grade levels that I teach (6th, 7th, 8th).  In my regular education classrooms I have done in the first week of school "me boxes" which are just collections of materials that describe the students, and when I got the tech art teaching position I thought I would keep this lesson/project going, but in my new position as a tech art teacher I had to incorporate the new classroom element that I was in so I made it into a digital project using PowerPoint.  I like the concept of adding more of an online part to the project.  Thank you for your ideas and I look forward to trying to add your suggestions to this project.

I enjoy your project and I love the concept of having your students create wiki pages for the different tribes.  It is interesting to think of it as moderizing the tribes by putting them on a wiki page.  The students would I think really enjoy this type of lesson.

Your rubric is very detailed and would seem like it would provide the students with a solid version of what is to be expected and what grade they could achieve.  I am a huge fan of rubrics as they tell the students exactly what is expected and allow them to really create the most or exactly what they want for the grade they want to get.  What role do you think rubrics play and how might they be changed in this digital age and with what we have learned about in this class?

Hello Brett

I like the concept of the research and then presentation.  I feel that the use of wikis is a far better presentation tool then the past tools such as posters or tri-fold boards.  I think that this type of new tech based presentation allows the students to transfer information and not worry so much about the look of project but focus on that crucial content piece.  I think that as teacher this type of presentation is far better also because you do not have to store five different classrooms worth of materials or hang them up you can post them or have them posted and students can see them with out having to take up space in your room.  How have your students taken to these types of projects or the conversion to this type instead of the traditional poster or research paper route? What have they decided is the benefits or drawbacks to it?  Great project and detail.

I found your lesson on PowerPoints to be extremely detailed and user friendly.  I am sure that your students enjoy learning the ins and outs of the program knowing that they can focus on aspects of their lives that they find interesting.  Having instructional videos to guide students is also an inovative appraoch which you use to great effect.  You include everything in your lesson that students or other educators might need to know, from objectives to grading rubrics.  A very well done job!

Hi Tina,

I like your lesson.  I especially like the fact that the students will have to memorize the parts of the animal kingdom.  I think today's classrooms are too focused on the ability to "access" information and without having to learn anything.  I don't see you're media piece or online area where the students will be working anywhere but I could be missing it.  I like the fact that the students will be working together to contribute to the larger class project.  It provides students with a sense of contribution to something greater then themselves.  I might suggest providing the students with a detailed rubric of assessment.  Students (even teachers taking online courses!) have much more focus when they have clear objectives. Good job.

Brett,
Good choices for the project! The assessment was clear.
I was wondering about the amount of time it would take to complete and how the class time vs.homework time worked. Do all students have access to the necessary technology outside of class?
Great lesson!!

Great Lesson! It's very detailed! I especially liked the clear assignment! How long would it take to complete and what is the students' access? Is all work done in class?

Tina,

I am projecting this lesson to take around 1.5 weeks to complete - start to end.  The bulk of that time will be over winter break - so, by default, the bulk of the work on this will not be completed in class.  I will be merely providing a support role while on break (via the method we communicate online - either list-serve or Google groups).

For AP Psych (and for other AP courses) there are some units students need to "complete" outside of class time.  This is typically one of them, and I thought it would be a great way to incorporate these technologies!

I agree with your statement of accessing knowledge not knowing the knowledge.  Students are hooked up and plugged into instant data streams that can feed what ever they need when ever they need, which when put to a test or a life situation that calls for knowledge of subject they are often at a lose and do very poorly.  I think that these types of projects that force the kids to recall information are very important and rarely done in the classroom anymore.  What types of projects or activities do you do that cause students to learn and recall information that they have processed?

Your project is very interesting and the program you used is something that I am not very familiar with, what are the costs of this type of program for a district to use?  Your concepts of having the students work with information that they have to memorize is important and must really teach your kids to process and understand the information.  I do not seem to understand your assessment of the project, can you explain it.  What is the focus of what you are assessing them on and what type off assessment is this if you are using Blooms Taxonomy?

Hi, Thanks for your questions.

I believe that,(a presentation to class or adults),  involves some of the highest levels of Blooms Taxonomy where the student must analyze the artwork and describe to others what it means to them – actually synthesizing the material they know. I believe that once a student teaches the information on a topic, they have usually reached the modalities of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and then they further cement the information by tying it to a text to real life experience.  This has been proven by Johns Hopkins University to be a sound program for literacy achievement.  www.googleartproject.com  is a free download from Google and has many more features than the what I mentioned in the lesson.

Brett: That is a very impressive lesson plan. It seems extremely thorough and self-explanatory. If I were facing the task of the assignment I would think it would take quite a bit of time, more like a term project rather than a lesson? I also wondered what life skill or whatever it is that you are really hoping to have the students learn from the project, aside from activism in general? There are many intriguing possibilities for the direction of the project, according to the inclinations of the students carrying it out, which I think will spark the interest of the average senior. It certainly appears to be ready to use. Good luck with it.

That is an interesting lesson plan. Since I don't know about wikis I am going to use your links to try to learn what I can about them. The structure and content of your lesson plan was easy to follow. The part about learning styles might not be needed unless you are trying to convey that information to the audience for your lesson plan (principal, etc.). Thanks for sharing the plan with us.
