We used to send a disposable camera, a scrapbook with suggestions for inclusion, drawing, a diary entry etc. or a separate little diary. School used to fund the printing of the film after the event. Its always difficult as there is a lot of pressure on families, and sometimes the work appeared to have been done on behalf of the child. We supplemented the pack with a few maths activities drawn from recent class experience, some snap cards and suggestions for some card games. That was fairly quick to put together.

§  [EAL-Bilingual;2415] EMAG/pupil premium [2 Updates]

§  Pupil premium grant [1 Update]

A number of my primary schools have expressed concern at pupils going on
extended visits abroad to visit family countries include Bangladesh,
Hungary and Thailand (KS1 & 2). I know what is needed but don't have time
to produce something. Are there any resource packs available for purchase?
Or is anyone able to share one (I would acknowledge you!) - happy to add to
it.

Thanks loads.

Dear Colleagues,
Rewrite is currently looking for participatory drama facilitators with experience and training in English
language teaching to add to their pool of tutors. This is due to the development of their pioneering
Creative ESOL programme for newly arrived young migrants and refugees.
Full details including how to apply are attached to this email.

Hi all,

I think I may well be labouring under a massive misapprehension here, but
my understanding was that EMAG was simply mainstreamed into DSG (see
http://www.education.gov.uk/childrenandyoungpeople/strategy/financeandfunding/a0076833/ethnic-minority-achievement-grant
)?

Regards,

Steve

It doesn't actually matter - a school can spend its pupil premium as it
wishes and if EAL pupils for example are a vulnerable or needy group in the
school, then monies can be allocated to them - for an EAL teacher,
resources, bilingual support etc. And if they happen to be an EAL pupil
with an armed forces background on free school meals and looked after - so
much the better in terms of funding!!!

Very useful postings on the use of the PPG!

It is worth acknowledging that schools are between a rock and a hard place
when it comes to using PPG to fund what we used to call EMAG. The
accountability framework via Ofsted makes it absolutely clear that the
funding has to be spent on the targeted group of pupils, hence the
'deception' that Nicola refers to; it is understandable that schools wish
to protect themselves from criticism.

In addition, the DfE requirement is to publish not only the allocation of
funding, but also the impact of the previous year's funding, so it is
important that spending on EAL specialist staff, for example, is related to
accelerated progress amongst pupils receiving free school meals. A good
example of reporting that meets the requirements can be found at:
www.sns.hackney.sch.uk/how-we-spend-our-pupil-premium-grant/

You can also find out the illustrative allocation for your school (based on
last year's pupil numbers) at:
http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/adminandfinance/financialmanagement/schoolsrevenuefunding/a00218077/funding-settlement-2013-14
then click on the link: Pupil Premium 2013-14 School Tables - illustrative
allocations<http://media.education.gov.uk/assets/files/xls/p/suppressed_school_13-14_illustrativev2.xls>
and when the Excel spreadsheet opens, click on the 'Families' tab.
