Reference movies are a hack and require that the app using them is going
through the actual Apple Quicktime component libraries in order to use
the Avid reference movie codec plugin, which requires the old Apple
Quicktime for Windows being installed, which only runs in 32-bit apps --
which is why modern apps don't work, because they've all had to
implement their own Quicktime file handlers that don't use the Quicktime
libraries and plugins.
All things being equal, if nothing else changed (a newer version of
something got installed, etc) I'm not sure why your Squeeze *was*
working with them but now isn't... but you're better off exporting
uncompressed Quicktimes from DS using something like the Animation codec
at 100%, and then compressing using any app from of those. Pretty much
everything should be able to read Animation.
Yeah it sucks because it takes longer, but it's the only reliable thing.
