Hello All,

I just loaded and setup Freedv on my station PC.  Had to use the 32bit version the 64bit would not run.

So, how do I find when folks are on that I can connect to.  I am in USA in Indiana.

What bands and times.  I work during the daytime Monday through Thursday.

I would love to see if this works. I'm sure there will be some adjustments necessary.

Thanks W9KJO

Can you try right-clicking the 64bit installer and choosing to install as administrator? I had one user report that fixed it for him. It would be nice to get a confirmation.

That was the first thing I did when it wouldn't open.  I uninstalled it and reinstalled it as an administrator.  It still would not open the program.

I seems to work in 32bit version however I have yet to make any contacts.

People are on FreeDV almost all the time.  Even you don’t hear them transmitting.

Many of us have it running in the background, and with the digital squelch, it can be completely silent, until someone starts to transmit.

So, give a call a few times, and see what comes back.

And most important, drop in on the QSO finder to see who may be trying to make a connection in spite of the weal band conditions.

Ok I am Logged onto qso.freedv.org

I see 5 call signs plus my own.  How do I know what freq these hams are on so I can try to talk to them?

When I click on a call it shows their information but not what freq they are on.

Thanks.  Still learning.

Oh, one more thing.

In the US here, 99% of the activity is in 14.236.

We do try to use the other bands but it seems that it limits your coverage areas as expected, so it gets a lot harder to talk with multiple people in a group.

Many of the guys in Europe have had a lot better success with 40 meters.

But we are able to go anywhere the propagation is. :)

Has somebody configured FreeDV 1.1 to work with the IC-7300 using the
USB cable connection ?

My setup works fine with WSJT-X and Fldigi.

With FreeDV the PTT does not actuate.

( I have selected the IC-7200 as the 7300 is not available)

W9KJO/Walter:   Howdy neighbor. I'm here in Radcliff, KY, in your back yard. I just ordered a SM1000 and should have it in a week or so. I'm sure you'll probably be able to hear me on the 160m, 75m, or 40m bands at this short distance. I believe that 7177 or 7190 khz in the day time might be our best bet.  As soon as I receive my SM1000 and get it hooked up, I'll start hanging out on the FreeDV QSO Finder at qso.freedv.org, looking for some contacts. Good luck with your new FreeDV setup. I hope you make many contacts.

Best regards,

Hello All,

I tried a few times yesterday to get connected but was only able to hear a few audible words, turns out it was a QRM nearby analogue station.

So I have yet to receive a digital audio signal.

I will try more.

Apparently analogue station near DV freqs is a problem since they seem to drown out the DV signals.  I think when analogue station see the DV signal they assume it is noise.  On the waterfall it looks similar to noise.  In the past I may have thought it was noise and use the freq with a couple notch filters, not realizing that it was a transmission and not noise.

I wonder why we don't use the actual digital portion of the band when the bands are very active since our signal looks like a digital signal?  may have a better opportunity for comms as digital folk will see our signal as some kind of digital transmission.

Just a thought a question, but I am thinking when I still have not gotten this to work.  LOL

Educate me

Hi Walter,

The digital portion of the HF bands is for signals 500Hz wide or
narrower. All the FreeDV modes are wider than this.

Thanks Robert,

I did change on the radio CI-V to 19200 but no improvement :-)

I guess that the program FreeDV should have a menu to select the speed
like it is in Fldigi and in WSJT-X.

By the way my setup works fine with those two programs.

Hope that FreeDV 1.3 will have a support for the IC-7300 and for
adjusting the speed.

Pino,

I have noticed on my 7600 that some programs with work setting a specific
baud rate, but at least one wants the CI-V rate to be set to AUTO. Have you
tried AUTO? Also, I'm using FreeDV V1.2 now.

I believe Pino was using Linux, when I talked to him a few days ago. And he did not have the latest Linux build.

The Windows 1.2 build does indeed support the IC-7300 as it has the latest Hamlib set.

And I'm sure the latest Linux fileset does the same, if you go to the repository to do the build yourself.

I am not familiar with what is in the available in the prebuilt version available.

Perhaps someone on the list here can confirm that for us.

Hi Pino,
With the speed set to 19200 (rather than115200 as needed for the spectrum scope in RS-BA1) and with hamlib option set to IC-7300 and the correct COM port selected PTT works here between a Windows 10 laptop and my IC-7300, using just the USB cable.

I have the problem that the audio isn't getting through from the PC to the RIG - fine in RX.

Sorry, forgot to point out, this is with FreeDV 1.20 64 bit version, I believe you are still using v 1.10? I should also have said the com port speed has to be changed in the IC-7300 menu - not at the PC end.

Resumen:

here are the main point out of my experience in connecting the IC-7300
to the computer (Linux in my case) for digimodes via the USB cable.

1- Upgrade the IC-7300 firmware from 1.3 to the last...1.4 in my case.

2- Get a good USB cable.

3- Make sure to have a persistent device name as explained in:

http://rolfblijleven.blogspot.nl/2015/02/howto-persistent-device-names-on.html

editing /etc/udev/rules.d/99-usb-serial.rules
in my case I also made a symbolic link in /dev so that /dev/IC-7300
points to /dev/USB0

4- Install the last version of hamlib ...at present ver. 3.1

5- CI-V speed on the radio to AUTO works just fine...as on FreeDV the
speed is not settable.

Hi Pino,

Do you have any other applications that are able to access the IC-7300
via the virtual serial port over the USB cable and send CVI commands to
the rig? (e.g. rig control)?

I presume you are using the Linux version of FreeDV, in which case my
experiences with FreeDV on Windows 10 and IC-7300 probably wont be of
help to you.

Are there specific Linux drivers from ICOM for the IC-7300, to talk to
the audio and com interfaces of the chip within the rig, if not that
could be the problem.

Hi Pino,

I use FreeDV on Linux with my IC7200, so we must be close.

On my system FreeDV is linked with a Ubuntu-supplied Hamlib package.

Please try to use the Hamlib rigctl utility from the command line, and
see if you can trigger PTT. Would also be useful to double check the
version of hamlib FreeDV is building against, version etc

$ rigctl -V
$ rigctl -l | grep IC_7300

If you can use rigctl to trigger PTT, I'll add some debug info to FreeDV
so we can work out what the difference is.

Cheers,

David

Yesterday FreeDV did work fine on the PTT...

today there is no way .... maybe the change of season :-)

I have tried rigctl:

pino@Radio3:~$ /usr/local/bin/rigctl -m 373 -c 0x94 -s 9600 -r
/dev/IC-7300 -p /dev/IC-7300 T 1
pino@Radio3:~$ /usr/local/bin/rigctl -m 373 -c 0x94 -s 9600 -r
/dev/IC-7300 -p /dev/IC-7300 T 0

all work fine ....but FreeDV ignore the PTT command....

re-tried Fldigi and WSJT-X and they work just fine.

Which test can I do for you Chris ?

On a hunch "-s 9600" working means you have the 7300 set to 9600 bps. I believe
some postings here suggested 19200 was the correct setting for this app.

How to set up FreeDV 1.2 for Linux to work with the IC-7300 using the
USB cable connection.

Update:

1- Upgrade the IC-7300 firmware from 1.3 to the last...1.4 in my case.

2- Get a good USB cable.

3- Make sure to have a persistent device name as explained in:

editing /etc/udev/rules.d/99-usb-serial.rules

in my case I also made a symbolic link in /dev so that /dev/IC-7300
points to /dev/USB0

4- Install the last version of hamlib ...at present ver. 3.1

5- Compile the 1.2 source code. If your PC is in Spanish possibly you
will get an error at the last make, so edit
./build_linux/src/CMakeFiles/freedv.dir/flags.make
and remove CR LF from the Spanish strings.

5- Set the CI-V speed on the radio to 19200 as at present FreeDV can not
change the speed and it comes with that speed.
AUTO works just fine if FreeDV is run just after having powered the
IC-7300 as the radio recognizes the speed of the first sent string....
then remain fixed on that speed.
