Hi Paul,

I would like to see pics.

I considered changing the control levels on my Powerfab to a more modern type of 'joystick' control.  In the end I decided against it- getting a good new block and re-jigging the controls would not bring any material advantage to me as the current set is in good condition.  However, if I had problems with the existing controls, I would certainly consider it.

Is that the "Gravedigger" machine you have?

Tom

I love the modern machines- but when access to an area won't allow them in, or they'll cut up too much, then I REALLY love the Powerfab- the alternative being a pick 'n shovel!!

Using a towable digger, can require a re- wiring of your brain/hands, particular if the digger has no means of mobility other than crawling by use of the bucket!!

Best of luck

Tom

Hi tommyd,

Just thought to mention that the Smalley 360 or '5' (as it became
known
once there were also bigger models in the range) went through several
deisel engines over its lifetime. the first being the SR1, but around
1975 the MK 3 came out with a 7.5 HP ST1, this in turn was superseeded
by the 5 W (approx 1980) using the 9.5 HP LV 1 (all Lister)

A MK 3 can be seen in the past stock of www. jcbdiggers.com (click
on excavators 2 tons) The 5 W is similar to the 5T on Jims site
but has a walking undercarraige & the axle hinges up & down -
locked & unlocked via 'hydroclamps' rather than mech. lever.
Above info from Mr Smalley about a year ago, he said the
best '5' all round was the MK 3
The main difference between MK1 & 2 is the ability to offset
(via pins at the boom base)

There is also a MK 3 filmed on youtube on Sark, Ex Army
I think. Would love to see any pics any of you have.
I once drove both the '5' & '10'

Pics are of a Smalley 5 Mk 3, So if info correct, engine
should be Lister ST 1
Some lister engines had magnets built into the flywheel &
coils in an aluminium finned box on the casing enclosing
the flywheel (bit like the set up on a mower or
motorbike) Most 5s just had handle starting.
Lister used to be quite helpfull in identifying engines
also manuals for these can often be found on the net.
The Smalley manual may though have hints on how to set
the legs up for various situations when in a tight spot.
Alternate (longer) legs were available to make the
unit capable of work on steep slopes (the drawings still
exist I am told) but I never saw this option fitted
I used to find digging in tough ground was best done
against the pair of inclined legs as it anchors the
machine well. Thanks for pics, bring back a lot of
memories (mine was the Mk 2 though)
