hello all
i just joined this site ,its interesting, as i have a great interest
in plant myself, i am a contractor in ireland. i am currently looking
for a smalley track machine (digger) age is not really a problem, i
would be looking for it as a restoration project and it would work
about 2 weeks per year in the bog. im not really sure about the model
number , but i remember seeing the forestry using them at one time in
wet ground.
so if you could point me in the direction of one i would be greatful
and may even make an offer on it.
i would also be greatful to any comments from anybody who has
expierence with a smalley.
thanks
conor

Hi Conor,

Thanks for joining the group. I recently added a Smalley brochure from
the 1980's see http://www.oilyhands.co.uk/images/Smalley_5T_brochurev2.pdf

The 5T was a tracked machine but I don't know how many were sold. Most
of the Smalley's I have seen have been the original type which just
pull themselves around.

Cheers

Jim

Hi Conor,
I know more about the walking Smalley models but regarding 'bogmaster'
wide track low ground
pressure machines, I know of two as built by Smalley. One is indeed a
wide track version of the
Smalley 5T machine (20 Hp Lister) the other is the 808 wide track
version, think these were
about 4 tons in weight, the latter being used by environmental groups
& Forestry Commission.
A search on Smalley excavator reveals many in use by canal restoration
groups inc many 'one off'
special builds. If another make would do, look through the past stock
of www.jcbdiggers.com as
there are many Japanese minis of all sizes & builds etc.
I once drove the rare but excellent Smalley 10 walker (40 Hp). Many
were exported to the Swiss
mountains from '74 on. Pity no photos survive of this unit. The plant
writer Lawrie Tootell
tested & wrote his findings - Construction News March '75 - but cannot
re find this article as
their archive dos not go back past 1990.

Conor, I have a Smalley, belonged at a time to Coilte, she's an 8T,
never seen another, but a great machine she is. Way ahead of her time,
with steel tracks, offsetting jib, great break out power, runs her
(rather noisy) Lister 3 cylinder on an eggcup of diesel, all day, starts
on a half turn, even in mid winter. Lots of parts similar/replaceable
with JCB or Case, I might be selling her in about 5 years time, but if
you come across one in bits for parts, please let me know, Al
