IDL virtual Machine (VM) is a program needed to make PDFgetX2 to run.
Since IDL was bought by the company ITT, it has become more difficult
to navigate their web-page to find VM, which can be downloaded and
installed for free.

I am not sure if this link is the best one to get there, but at least
I found a link to VM and was able to download and install it so that
PDFgetX2 would run. ITT, the IDL company, puts you through a somewhat
arduous and annoying registration step, but after you register, this
link will allow VM to be downloaded for free.

Good luck, please post experiences or other helpful links and info.

I downloaded and installed this on Mac OSX 10.4 last month, and everything worked fine. You do have to register, and I think you have to download the entire IDL package even if you only want the virtual machine, but it only slows things a little.

The actual application that you then need to run is called "idlvm.app" or just "idlvm"

It launches the X11 X-windows manager on the Mac, so this presumably has to be pre-installed. I don't know if 10.5 installs this automatically, but for 10.4 I had to install this from the main installer CD. This cannot be found online.

Hi everyone and happy new year (well, it's almost February..)

just to add my experience...I wrote them thorough the contact page, because I was not sure of what to do. I explained why I needed the VM and such, they asked which version I needed, and they sent me:
1) a direct link for the windows version
2) a CD for the Linux version

the only 'problem' is that now I receive emails from them once a while...but it's not a huge price to get PdfGetX2 running!

cheers
Monica

Hi Avyay,

Please, if you are not replying to a discussion, send a new message
to diffpy...@googlegroups.com instead of using the reply function
of your email program. In such way your question will get a nice new
thread in the diffpy-users archive.

Is the pdfgui.exe.log file empty or does it contain any
error messages? We have recently found PDFgui does not run on certain
WinXP versions, this happens due to missing system libraries. Please
see the following thread for details and solution

http://groups.google.com/group/diffpy-dev/browse_thread/thread/31dc3841bdcd7c55

If this does not help, please post here the content of
pdfgui.exe.log (an attachment containing .exe somewhere
in its name may get rejected by spam filters).

Good luck,

Pavol
