Dear Venerables and Dhamma friends,
To honor the ancient poetry of the Therīgāthā, there will be a 2-week Therigatha Festival with interviews and numerous affiliated programs by bhikkhu/nis around the world: https://therigathafestival.net/
The 2-week Therigatha festival celebrates and highlights the words & accomplishments of our ancient therīs -- eminent bhikkhunī disciples of the Buddha -- with daily interviews culminating in a live panel discussion on May 16th, along with affiliated programs throughout the 2-week period.
Every day starting next week (May 3-16), a group of bhikkhunīs is releasing YouTube interviews on "Finding Sanctuary," focused on their favorite verses of poetry by enlightened monastic women of the Buddha's day (from the ancient poetry book the Therīgāthā). One video will be released per day. Many portions, organized out of Sri Lanka or Australia, will air at 6am EDT, and they will be worth getting up for! But you will also be able to watch them later at your leisure.
More details on the bhikkhunis' daily interviews can be found in this announcement. Here are some highlights: Our good friend Ayya Sudhamma (Ven. Bhikkhuni Sudhamma Theri) will be specially honored in a pre-recorded interview about the whole book of poetry, and that recording will be released on May 9th at 4am EDT. The video will be available to watch here on YouTube when it's released.
The broadcast premier of Ayya Tathaloka's affiliated program "The Therigatha HerStory of Bhikkhuni Ordination" with Bhante Sujato will air on Sunday May 2nd at 5pm PDT (California Pacific Daylight time). Ayya Tathaloka has called this "a 10-year check in with the knowledgeable Bhante Sujato of Sutta Central on topics of long-term mutual study and historical/herstorical interest in the Therigatha," including:
- "The other first Bhikkhuni"?--Bhadda Kundalakesi
- Bhikkhunis ordained by the Buddha?--the Therigatha view
- Bhikkhuni-only Bhikkhuni Ordinations?--exploring textual evidence
The videos will be available at the following links when released: Part 1 "Rediscovering Bhadda Kundalakesi"
Part 2 "The Therigatha Herstory of Bhikkhuni Ordination"
For details on all the wonderful events, including programs from Venerable Bhikkhuni Kusuma, Ayya Santini, Ayya Vimalanyani, Ayya Yeshe, Ayya Soma, Ayya Munissara, and Bhantes Saranapala, Akaliko, Damita, Sumano, Sunyo and Sujato, see the listing of all Therigatha Festival programs.
