Hello,

A Lanceolated Warbler Locustella lanceolata, at the Joka marshes, southern fringes of Kolkata, 7.03.2010.  This is probably the first record of the bird from this area.

I would say this is a Grasshopper Warbler (naevia). Lanceolated has
much heavier streaking on throat and breast and is quite yellow on
undertail coverts. regards Bill

Thank you for your suggestion.  If I may, I had the impression that the Grasshopper was a small Locustella with olive-grey crown and mantle and with, quoting Rasmussen – “ pale and almost unmarked underparts with buffy breast and flanks”  Furthermore she writes, about the Grasshopper,  – “ note dark tertials with broad olive-grey edges, weakly marked rump, and dark olive tail with (at most)  weak pale tips. May have bright yellow wash below. Other Locustella are darker above and Lanceolated has more streaked than spotted crown.” The images at OBI bear out these.

The initial ID was based on these and specifically on the colour and streaking on the crown as again, the Lanceolated ID is described as ‘ sharp narrow black streaks on dark olive brown upperparts’…’First winter may have very few streaks below and is best told from adult Grasshopper by streaked (not spotted) upperparts’.

I hope I have not tried your patience with these words. I am attaching a third shot of the bird.

Regards,

Kshounish

I think this is lanceolata based on the descriptions and photographs I
have access to.

In particular, while this individual is not as heavily streaked below as
some lanceolata, and although some young naevia do show light streaking
below, the very fine streaks on the undertail coverts (fortunately seen
very well in Kshounish's second photo) point to lanceolata. To a lesser
extent, the distinct streaks (and not lines of spots) on the crown and
mantle and the richer brown colour of the upperparts support this. (It
also does look rather yellowish below to me.)

Looking at all the pictures, I would go for Lanceolated.
